marine radio

I have a marine radio, and I was woundering if there are any complecations with like codes or something from the coast guard. Any web sites with any info on marine brodcasting would be helpful.
i have found that I can hear the coast guard, but when the civallian responds i cant hear him, or if i can, its jumbled

the CG uses a very powerful system. therefore they can hear you and you them. the reason you don't hear someone else talking is merely distance. normal range is 45-60miles at high power.

I have a portable Uniden Marine radio 1/2.5/5 watts. I am told to use the lowest wattage possible to get the job done. What can I expect under 'normal' conditions with the 5 watt, 2.5 watt and 1 watt settings?

VHF is generally considered "line of sight" communications. Repeaters are generally used to expand distances between stations. The Marine Radio frequencies, 156 MHz to 161 MHz is divided into multiple channels. Yes, you should use the least amount of input power or setting, to your final amp, to make a good communications. Atmospheric conditions and proper connection and impedance matching of your antenna to your radio for minimum SWR, all play into maximizing the signal going out.

Added info:
Don't know what "normal conditions" are out at sea. Too many variables with atmospheric conditions and the integrity of your equipment.

If I need a converter where can i purchase a cabinet to hold the marine radio and converter?

It shouldn't be a problem to plug the speakers directly into the radio. To be sure, check the owner's manual for your radio to determine what the speaker output impedance is. It should be either 4 or 8 ohms.

I'm guessing that your rock speakers are 8 ohm. If that is the case, simply connect both speakers in parallel to the jack that plugs into the radio.

Hello All. I heard that you have to have a license in order to talk on a Marine VHF Radio. Where can I apply for one of these, how much does it cost, and is there any kind of test involved. Any kind of study materials I should be studying if there is a test.

Contact the Federal Communications Commission (The nearest office can help you). Things have changed in the last 40 years or so, but I don't believe there's a test and I believe there is a fee. (Call them and ask - the information is free.)

I have a kenwood TK - 7100 radio want to know if it is posible to do adjustments on the radio to use it as a marine radio , or will it be better to resell it and buy the correct one .

They make radios especially for marine use.

I've also seen watertight covers that flip down over the face plate, to keep it dry. Might be useful if you have to use a non-marine rated unit
