mobile police scanners legal when walking or sitting?
Scanner

I know most states forbid them in cars, but I've been harrassed by cops for watching trains while listening to one with railroad frequencies only on it.
This was in oakland county,Michigan and I was a RR Historical Society member collecting photo's for the newsletter.

in most states pigs are allowed to 'scan' or 'radar' you so that you can pay a fine for speeding. however, they scowl at being 'scanned' or 'radared' themelves. just another in their long list of duties to society.

police mobile fingerprint scanner question?
East London Advertiser

hi,

i heard the uk police have these mobile fingerprint scanners to check your true identity.

how does the fingerprint prove who you really are if your fingerprints never been in a police database before? does this technology only work to criminals in the past that had their fingerprints taken?

also if they do the scan how long does it be stored on the database?

thanks,

I use this piece of equipment every day not sure if the same bit of kit is used nationally but ours is called 'Lantern'.
It is at this time in our Service only used by Road Policing Units, and airport officers. They only show prints held on the national database, so if you have never been arrested or reported for a recordable offence you will return a negative trace.
At the moment there is no legislation in place in regards to making the request for roadside prints, as a result prints can only be taken with conscent, which is recorded. That will change in the future. As previously stated roadside prints are deleted either directly after taking or at the end of the shift. The Lantern is there to assist in identifying known people, we also use it to identify deceased when they are found with no ID.

Would it be possible to access online Police Scanner feeds (.pls) using a mobile phone?

I'm interested in whether or not it would be possible to access live streaming online Police Scanner feeds using a mobile phone? Often these feeds use .pls file types that work with Realplayer and/or iTunes, that is, on computers. I would like to know if it is also possible with mobile phones enabled with either of these players.

If not, are there any other possible ways to 'tune in' to Police scanner feeds using a mobile phone?

(If anyone wishes to test this out for me, www.police-scanner.info has the most comprehensive collection of links.)
I apparently didn't phrase simply enough, so I'll try again. For some feeds, such as the nevada feed on that website, it will download a .pls file, that will play in iTunes or Realplayer. Presumably this .pls is what is streaming the audio to my iTunes, I am simply wondering if this process will work with mobile phones, and if not, does anyone know of any other alternatives.

No, I don't know squat about police scanners. But obviously, if I did know, I wouldn't be asking. And no, I did not ask them. I would expect that would also be obvious. If you have answers, please feel free to let me know. If you're going to make irritating remarks, don't bother. You're wasting my time and your own. It is a yes or no question.

The problem here is that you are comparing apples to oranges, and you are expecting what you want to be something easy and common, because it seems similar to what you have seen.

There is nothing at all similar between a police scanner, and a realplayer feed.

First, a police scanner rotates playback of several channels, stopping at any channel it finds activity on. A realplayer feed is playing a single "channel" like a radio station.

Second, a police scanner picks up local police radios.. local meaning what is in range of the actual scanner antenna and crystals used to pick up the signal. People could be adding music to that realplayer feed from anywhere in the world.

So, you want to somehow take the very specific components that are inside a police scanner, and turn them into software, and add them to your phone?

Or do you just have absolutely no idea how a police scanner works?

I'm curious... you have that website http://www.police-scanner.info did you contact THEM, with this request? I mean, it does seem that they would know far more about this than anyone here on Yahoo Answers..

mobile police scanners?

What is an inexpensive good scanner to install in your vehicle?
Is the "trunking" thing a big issue?
Thanks!

Bearcat and Radio Shack have relative inexpensive scanners. However, many police departments use trunking radios. If you want to hear them, you would need a trunking scanner and they are a little more expensive. Also, more police departments are switching to digital modulation. To hear these, you need a digital capable scanner. Of course, they are even more expensive, in the $500 to $800 range. If they are also encrypted, you won't be able to hear them no matter what you do.
