UHF Mobile Radio and Handheld UHF Radio compatable?

The Shuttle Service I work for is using Kenwood TK863G. I want to get a handheld piece as back up in case it breaks down. Now, I am looking at Kenwood TK3180. Is it true that I can listen and talk on the handheld as long as they have the same frenquency range?
Also, our mounted radio had our service initial displayed, does that mean I'll have to set my handheld as well? Does trunked system and conventional system restrict me from listening to one another?

I am probably asking non-sense questions but I hope someone could solve it for me. It's quite hard to find info. online.
Thx

Based on the specifications of each radio, I expect they will be compatible. Both support conventional channel selection, and trunking. It appears to just be a matter of set-up and configuration.

How do I modify a mobile magmount to use as a base antenna?

I have a Kenwood HT and, due to budget restrictions, I wish to build a mod to use my mobile mag mount at my desk as a base antenna.
I know I need to add ground plane radials. What length and how many do I need? Can I make a metal base with radials that the magmount can magnetically attach to?
Also, is this a safe alternative to an outside antenna (due to radio wave emissions).

A hand-held radio should have no problem with RF exposure. After all, you hold it up to your mouth to talk on it. The mag mount will work as a base antenna. If you have 2 metal file cabinets side-by-side, put the mag mount in the middle and you should be good to go. Keep the antenna away from computers as it will tend to distort the display. If you don't have any metal filing cabinets, a piece of metal about that size will work. It doesn't have to be heavy or thick.

Anyone self-installed the mobile setup (antenna, cradle, mount) for a MyFi XM radio in a Honda Pilot? Tips?

I currently have the antenna sitting on the dash; I'm sure I'd get better reception with it on the roof, but don't know where to put it (it's the magnetic antennta) or how to route the wire to the interior of the car.

When I installed my MyFi, we ran the line along the floorboard of the car and then out through the truck and put it on lid of the trunk. It works great like that, but you could do the same thing in a Pilot. Just run the wire along the floorboard and then bring it out through the back door and place it on the roof. You can use electrical tape to hold it down so that it doesn't get pulled out on accident.

Why does my Cobra Mobile CB Radio squeal on other people's radios?

I have been troubleshooting this problem for months...

I have mobile Cobra 18WX-ST-II CB Radio hooked up to a 4-foot Firestik no-ground-plane antenna. I get crystal-clear reception from people miles down the road, but when I transmit, people tell me to, "throw that CB out the window" because all it does it squeal like crazy. Plus, the TX transmit bar goes all the way into the red while transmitting.

I have the no-ground-plane antenna because my car is a 2005 Saturn Ion III, and is predominantly coverd in plastic. The antenna is mounted high on the trunk area of the driver's side, and it is insulated from the car. The coax runs through the trunk and along the floor of the inside of the cabin, up to the CB radio, which is hooked to the bottom of the dashboard of my car. The wire is not pinched in any way, nor is it cross. The connection is solid at both ends. I have tried tuning the end of the firestik, and I have tried grounding it directly to the negative terminal on the battery, even though it's a no-ground-plane necessary rig.

The CB Radio is power through the cigarette lighter with clean, solid connections.I am not picking up RF interference because I have tried the CB radio with the car shut off.

The CB is stock, the radio coax is unchanged, the antenna is unobstructed...

Please, for the love of God, can anyone give me some ideas? Do I perhaps need to find a way to ground the actual CB Radio metal box to the chassis? And if so, how? Could the position of the antenna be poor? Could I have not made solid ground connections even though it's a no-ground-plane rig?

Thank you.

First of all if the antenna is truly a "no ground" antenna, remove the wire from the negative post of the battery. There are two possiblities why it is squealing. You may be talking too close to the mic. Or if the radio came with the stock mic, the mic could be bad. See if you would be able to borrow someone else's mic for a test. Hold the mic about 4 inches away from your mouth when speaking. If your radio has a mic gain. Set the mic gain to the middle. The mic gain is like a internal power mic. If the mic gain is too high and you are talking too close to the mic, you may be over modulating (squealing) on the air. Even though it is a Saturn. I think that you would be able to get a trunk lip mount with a 3/8 x24 screw in antenna mount. When the antenna is mounted to the trunk lip (using the allen screws) it technically will be grounded. Best of luck.

CB Radio....I have just ordered a President Harry 11 Classic CB.. With a Wilson mag.. mount mobile antenna..?

Has anyone got one and if so could anyone tell me if this system is any Good.. ( Whats the range ? ) Also is it hard to install it in a Van ?..Any tips on how to install it..
Well Quantum leap ..Theres no shortage of smart arses like you on this site thats for sure..I bought it because I spend a lot of money on calls to my Van and truck driver friends and most of them have now bought CBs to keep in touch because its free and cool to use..

president is a good cb radio, and in my book wilson is the best antenna you can buy. if you bought the cb new it should have came with a cord that just plugs into your cigarette lighter, if not you can buy them at any auto store for about $10.00 you should be able to install it in under 30 min. easy
just mount your bracket where ever you are going to put it,
attach cb, put mike holder where you have easy access to reach it, hook mike to cb, and mount your antenna. plug cb into cigg. lighter. the range depents mostly where you are at.
note : be sure to have your cb calabrated to match your antenna or else it will burn up the board in your cb. if you do not have a calabrater, most auto stores will do it for a few dollars.
