old cb radio

I have a 1979 Sears Roadtalker, SSB, Base/Mobile CB radio. The radio is in exceptional condition and is installed in a Marmon Tractor of approximately the same year. I do not want to change the radio to a newer more powerful model for sentimental reasons. I am trying to find someone to work on it. Maybe an old radio tech with parts available. I want it to sound better and obviously be more powerful and I am willing to pay a fair price. I have been to at least 20 radio shops and they only want to work on new products. Any ideas??
Just an update, Yes CBs are very much still n use. Not only by hobbyists but, if you are in the trucking industry like I am, they are very much a part of our livelihood. The radio has been peaked and tuned at a shop recently, the SWRs are great and there is a high quality antenna system. The radio performs fine, I was hoping to find someone with parts to make it better.. echo/reverb board, stronger finals etc.. Thanks so much for your time and amswers so far.
Again I appreciate the answers and everyones time. I am not a "CB Rookie" just looking for a better sounding radio. If you will read my question you will see I did not ask for a power increase over the legal limit but instead for mods to increase its current level and make it sound better. I do have a ham liscence and this is a SSB radio.

Any modifications to CB radio that teke their power output over the 4 watt and 100% modulation limits are forbidden by FCC regulation.

Here is the applicable regulation:

Any modifications that make the radio do anything over and beyond what it was designed to do are also forbidden by regulation.

Sec. 95.425 (CB Rule 25) May I make any changes to my CB station transmitter?



(a) You must not make or have any one else make any internal modification to your CB transmitter.

(b) Internal modification does not include:

(1) Repair or servicing of a CB station transmitter (see CB Rule 24,

Sec. 95.424); or

(2) Changing plug-in modules which were certificated as part of your CB transmitter.

(c) You must not operate a CB transmitter which has been modified by anyone in any way, including modification to operate on unauthorized frequencies or with illegal power. (See CB Rules 9 and 11, Sec. Sec. 95.409 and 95.411.)

As an amateur operator you must be especially careful. You could be subject to the loss of your license. An amateur license does not give you special priveleges on CB. They are 2 different services, each with their own regulations.

Why not just stick to the ham bands? They are certainly much more fun and you can do all the enhancements you want legally.

We were stuck at a truck stop in Wyoming for over 24 hours because they shut down I-80 due to a 15 or 20 truck pile up. They finally just opened ...

It is a '76 Panasonic 23 channels with the antenna it came with. I no longer drive truck, I just wanted to put this on my little volvo and talk across town or on the interstate I live by. What can I do to get better range and is getting a new CB worth the cost?

if you local channels, 23 or under, no reason to.............

I believe the Johnson used the same power cord as the Cobra if you don't have one.
If you have the power cord put red wire to a 12 volt supply and the black wire to a good ground (something metal under the dash should work)
Make sure you have an antenna connected before you key the mic, if you don't you will fry the older radios.

anybody no if the watts in these radio can be peak up.

it ll put out about 6 watts if you clip the modulation limiter resistor. but then you will over modulate and sound like the gal at the mc donalds drive thru.

you would be better served to get a 100 or 150 watt linear amplifier and leave the radio stock. linears can be found all over the place, their just not exactly legal to use. a good antenna goes a long way. i always used whip antennas, mostly because i had a 1000 watt linear and i would melt the solder out of the load coils on cheaper antennas.

check your standing wave reading befor you key up with any linear. the feed back from an out of tune antenna will smoke your linear in a heart beat.
