police band radio

Ok, i have joined a volunteer fire dept. and they have a lot of police/emg radios laying around that are from up north, they say they can't be programmed down where we live because they are on a different band width or something like that. I was wondering if there is a way to change the band width to allow it to be reprogrammed. They said if i can get them reprogrammed i could use one of them, instead of me having to go out and buy me a new one, since don't have one as of yet.

The guys may be right. If the radios are in the VHF band, they cannot be made into UHF band radios etc.. I'm sure if there was an easy way to convert the radios, they would have done it to save money.

What kind of a system is police radio?

I hear all these different systems for consumer and business use, such as FRS/GMRS, professional mobile radio, citizens band, business band, logic trunked radio....where do most police radios fall?

Is it digital? trunked? encrypted?

There is no specific answer to your question.

It is simply any radio that is programmed to receive a frequency assigned to the police.

You can listen all you want, but transmitting would be illegal.

Anything that transmits is covered by the FCC, and they only permit transmitting when it does not interfere with anyone else. Your transmission would obviously interfere with the police.

I know the frequencies affect the range. So the range of the 800 mg band and the 150 mg vhf band

The 1st answer is correct. We have repeaters that extend the signal. When you make the call it hits a repeater and send the signal to the next tower till it reaches the dispatch radio.

When you make a call from your personal radio (the one you were on your body the car has a repeater that picks it up and sends it to a tower repeater as long as you are close enough to the car.
