Here is a basic introduction on how to use a handheld police scanner and the Canadian Trackside Guide to listen in on railway traffic and ...
I have been told many departments have gone digital and the regular police scanners are becoming pretty much useless. However, the other day I was in a Wawa around midnight and the clerk had what seemed to be an ordinary scanner and it was picking up police dispatches. I would of asked him but he seemed like a weirdo so I figured I didn't want to get stuck in conversation with him.
Some analog police radios use a feature called Trunking where they simultaneously hop frequencies to avoid the prying ears of people with police scanners. Also, you are a complete jerk. Kanye never said he hates white people.

I want to buy a police scanner. Some have 100 channel and some have 1000 channel. What is the difference? If it only have 100 channel does that mean I wont be able to get some of the police scans? I found a website that lists many of San Francisco's police and fire do I have to manually input the frequency into the scanner? Please forgive me but I've never owned a scanner before.
Scanners work much the same way as your FM car radio. There are some differences in features like digital modes, PL/CTCSS, and some others to improve the service for users like police, fire, ems, businesses, and DPW etc..
Much as you have "presets" on the radio you have channels on the scanners. The more the better. In an urban area 100 channels would be filled quickly, 1000, would be better.
Depending on the scanner you have you may be able to program via some software and a cable. Otherwise you have to input these by hand. Most of the current crop of scanners will take some type of software to load files of data in.
Specify the type and we can point to the software for your scanner.
You may have to create the file at least once by typing it in to the software to load to the scanner. Some scanner info sites do provide files, but you have to match it to your software and scanner. Example MegaScanner 101 and MegaScanner Software 101 work together. SuperScanner102 and SuperScanner 102 software work. Super Scanner102 and MegaSoftware 101 will NOT work together.
The key thing(s) to know:
1) Does your area use trunking? What type? Motorola, EDACS, LTR?
2) Does your area use digital? What Type? P25, ProVoice?
If you answer P25 to #2 your OK. Any other answer and your area will not be scanable.
Trunking throws a little bit of a wrinkle into things as its not as important as how many channels, but the type of trunking and how many scan lists and talkgroups you can program into the scanner.
Price: $79.99
Alarm clock with snooze function
Store and scan up to 100 channels
AM/FM Radio
Includes service search and weather scan
have one of the older police scanners with 10 channel-programmable format, no seek button.
what are fun things to do? what do you do when your bored with a scanner?
what channels are fun to listen to?
Don't do things with police scanners that could get you in trouble. There are productive things you can do with your time.Play a computer game (scrabble, mah jong or bridge for me), read a book or magazine, do crossword puzzles or sudoku, listen to music, watch a movie, write in a journal, play a board game, or answer questions here on yahoo answers. Cook something, clean the house, go for a walk, work out, call a friend, send emails, visit someone, or even go shopping.
Writing in a journal is an interesting thing to do, especially when you go back weeks or months or even years later and read what you wrote. Buy yourself an interesting blank journal that represents who you are, and start writing your daily thoughts, ideas, and important events. You'll be surprised at how quickly you will look forward to the time you spend with it each day. And it could become a powerful record for posterity.
Look for a new hobby. Find something that is of particular interest to you. Possibly you might like to begin researching and compiling your family tree. I am sure many members of your family would encourage you with a project such as that. A couple of other things that come to mind that I have found interesting in the past, and they now occupy my grandchildren are learning to do origami (read the story about Sadako and the 1000 paper cranes, and maybe start a paper crane project of your own), and another is learning to tie different knots (most book stores will have a book on the different knots, and it is quite interesting, and also a very useful skill to have).
Take a class - learn the finer points of digital photography, painting, writing short stories, small appliance repair, playing bridge, dog grooming, pottery, home maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, quilting, scrapbooking, or anything else that is offered in your area. Often you can find classes that are free, or almost free.
Finally, and probably most importantly, if you find yourself bored often, consider volunteering. It will give you a new focus in your life, and it is a good feeling to help someone less fortunate or more in need than yourself. It can be a life changing experience.
Boredom is a choice you make, not a state of existence. If you are bored, it is because you are allowing yourself to be bored. Look around you. Most likely you have books, and a wide variety of other possessions. Look at the things around you and think of ways to use them. If there are people around you, think of ways to help those people. Think of others and how to help them, not yourself, and you will never be bored.
Can i go anywhere online and listen to police radios with my computer instead of buying a scanner?
All you have to do is a search through YAHOO! for live scanner feeds. There are so many cities that run real time feeds to the internet it is ridiculous. Good luck and happy scanning. I did leave you a link below to try but there are limited cities that you can listen to on it.

Oberon#39;s Rest - Hacking Police Scanners
This has become a lot more difficult since 1994 when the FCC ruled that they would no longer certify scanner receivers that were "readily modifiable" for receiving cellular phone frequencies. From the late 1980s until 1994, most scanners were capable of being modified for "full 800 MHz. reception" by clipping a diode or jumper on the circuit board, the presence of which told the scanners firmware that it was supposed to be a "US" version as opposed to an "export" version. I would hardly consider however clipping a diode to be a "hack". If you come across some late 1980s and early 1990s vintage police scanners that haven't been totally butchered by individuals who should have been banned from...
