Old scanner i restored amp; put crystals in and listen to sometimes. Still works great even though it#39;s over 33+ years old. Although it#39;s ...
Tricks? A police scanner is just a radio receiver, just like the one in your car, except on a different frequency band. What electronic tricks can be done with your car radio?
'Crystal control' sounds impressive, but it's really not. In the old days, high frequencies were hard to maintain, due to simple heat properties, instability of components, and loose tolerances. A crystal provided an extremely stable base frequency from which other frequencies could be derived. Today, with microprocessors, nanotechnology, and extremely tight tolerances, it's not so necessary anymore.

I Have A Bearcat 5 Crystal Controlled Scanner It Will Not Scan It Will Turn On The Light For Channel 1 Comes On But It Will Not Scan Can Anyone Help Me?
not necessarily, I have a bearcat (number unknown) crystal scanner and a newer digital scanner (year unknown), and sometimes I get as much or more from the crystal scanner...it seems that it picks up some stuff from the repeater...honest to god-picks up a better range...sometimes I get half of a convo from the new scanner and the other half from the crystal. It depends on how things are setup, I guess...I mostly listen to police/fire for the area, I don't know how the system was constructed (it's not the best, for an island 9 mi long and 1 wide you'd think we'd be on one freq)...but in any case...
recently I went to turn up the volume and wound up messing up a few switches (it's on the floor near a couch)...couldn't remember the order so I just left them all open...just make msure the unit is on scan and that the light is moving...the scan/lock switch is between vol and squelch on my unit and is easy to miss (lettering may be worn), flip it the other way, open all switches and see if it works...that's the best I can do

Hi, I am building a AM/FM radio in school, and when I finish it and take it home, I want to turn it into a police scanner. I know it is possible, but how do I do it? Do I need to buy pager/scanner crystals?
Thanks!!
You would have to retune the coils and change the crystal but on top of that it's not a scanner as it would only tune a portion of the radio spectrum where you retuned it to... and my guess you wouldn't get much more than a megahertz or two with tuning.
Most who retune are looking for a certain frequency
