What is the range of a typical 5 watt handheld vhf radio?
Bucket full of gain

I'm wondering how far off shore I can go in my boat and still be able to talk to someone on land using a 5 watt handheld vhf radio. All the ones I'm looking to buy have no indication of this. Thanks for any input....

We have a vintage Sitex HH-300 handheld aboard our vessel at all times, as well as our base-mounted Uniden. The Sitex does extremely well using the "rubber-ducky" antenna to a distance of about 5 to 7 miles over open water talking to other sailboats and marinas.

If you're communicating handheld-to-handheld, about three miles is the the range you can expect.

I echo the opinions above, I wouldn't depend on a handheld as our sole means of radio communication.

Hope this helps!

Can a CB radio communicate with a VHF Radio?
NA7Q working satellites

I am wondering to see if I could use my CB radio to communicate with my friend who has a VHF radio.

No. The standard VHF radio works in the 150 MHz area and uses FM. A CB works in the 27 MHz area and uses AM. The VHF radio won't be able to communicate the the CB because of both conditions. Neither radio can operate in the frequency range of the other and neither radio can work on the other modulation. This mean the VHF can't send or receive AM and the CB can't send or receive FM.

Do I need a VHF or CB radio?
Ground Plane for Magnet Mount Antenna

In order to talk to an air plane from the ground you would need a VHF radio rather than an CB? And of you would have to have one of each one on the plane and another on the ground.

OK, if you are talking to someone from the ground to an airplane privately, you can CB, VHF, UHF, HF, the new family band radios, or two cups and a real long piece of string.

Yes, you would need one radio on the airplane and one on the ground.

VHF is used to communicate to ATC. I don't know what you are trying to do, so to answer this question we'd need more info.

How do I wire my VHF Radio?
Rescue 21 acceptance ceremony

I would like to know how to wire my West Marine VHF Radio.Coming out the back of the radio is a red wire, a white wire, and two black wires. The white wire and one of the black wires are a thinner gauge then the other black and red wires. Any solutions out there? Thanks

You could solder (best), or crimp connect a waterproof "In Line" fuse to the red wire, then connect it to a "terminal Ring", and put over the red + battery post, then ground the black wire, by connecting a "Terminal ring" to it and put it over the NEG.- battery post. The "In-Line" fuse is circuit protection, OR you can by-pass this by conecting to a spare fuse on the Panel (red +), then ground the black wire to the Neg on the battery or neg - on the panel (fuse block). Direct connection to the battery is best, the other wires probably go to the "Aux. Speaker" which you will need as the speakers on the radio are too small to be heard over engine noise. Soldering works BEST, then coat with "Liquid Lectric tape", or heat shrink tubing for a water resistant seal on the wires, and a good "Marine" connection. E-mail is open if further assistance is needed.

  • Another VHF Radio Issue Thread

Dude if it's an ancient radio, get a new one. They are pretty cheap. Together with a new antenna your lookin at maybe $225. I ran into the same situation with mine when I got my boat. If your having recieve problems chances are your going to have TX problems as well. But the bright side is mostly the problems like in the coax or the antenna. Downside is to test it with a known good antenna if you don't have any of the right equipment. (SWR meters, ohm meters, etc)
