Have a Sony weather radio. How do I program it to awaken me at night for tornados?
Contact the U.S. Weather service or it's proper name of "National weather service" or "NOAA" (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Association). Find out the weather frequency in your area, Probably a boater (like me), or a fireman (they use lot's of "scanners") would know the frequency in your area, then you punch in the frequency, and "set". My marine V.H.F. Radio has a "Weather Alert" feature. The frequency for S.W. Long Island, and NY city area is "162.55 Mgz." (for the area weather info.) frequency. If there is to be an "ALERT" sent out for a Rapidly moving upcoming Thunderstorm, they broadcast "Tones" that automatically turns "ON" the "weather Alert" frequency of 162.55mghz, and broadcasts the information.
The Midland WR300 is an alert radio that#39;s SAME compatible. The system allows for the radio to be programmed for specific counties and ...
I'm looking for the kind that sounds an alert when bad weather is approaching.

I'm the kind of person that worries if there's severe weather at night, so I need to make sure if it will wake me up if there is severe weather approaching.
Most weather alert radios support this feature but the important thing to note is it will only work if you receive a local NOAA signal. Not all NOAA weather alert radios are all that great, and I have played with a few that didn't recieve even a faint radio signal.

I've been looking at midland, first alert, radio shack and others and can't seem to make my mind up, wanted to survey folks who are more familiar with the issue than I am.
As to the Midland WX 100, I've heard that it's only partially SAME capable due to not being able to determine what types of warnings / watches you want to be alerted of?
First consider a NOAA Weather Radio that has Specific Area Message Encoding (SAME). This will allow you to select the counties that you want to hear weather watches/warnings for. Ones that do not have SAME will activate for any watch/warning in the local NWS warning area.
I have found the the Midland WR-100 is an excellent radio. I've recommended it to several individuals and businesses. You can purchase the radio at Wal-Mart for around $30. I'm sure there are other stores you can purchase the radio as well.
The WR-100 has SAME technology. The codes can be found by going to: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/nwr/nwrsame.htm
Yes some do. If you get a good one, you can select the types of alerts and warnings that it will report and for which counties.
The county feature is really worthwhile if you live in tornado alley because there are alerts and warnings issued for each county as the storms move and you DON'T want to hear them all! You can set it for the your county and the ones that adjoin it on the south and southwest (since that's the direction storms generally approach from).
You can set it for Storm watches, storm warnings, flood watches, flood warnings, tornado watches, tornado warnings, avalanche warnings, tsunami warnings, etc. Just pick the ones you need depending on where you live.
The radio I have puts out an alarm which will definitely wake you -- which is the whole reason to have it! The volume is adjustable.
