Ham radio (Yaesu Vertex VX-170) forums?
Yaesu VX-3R

Just recently got a yaesu Vertex VX-170 I want to use for ski touring and backcountry applications. also have the programming software etc.

Any good resources out there to walk a ham radio newbie through all the steps to just keep it simple and talk to other radios; open up repeaters etc.

better still - any users of this type of radio in Vancouver who'd be willing to walk me through this radio?

Thanks!

Try your local ham radio club in Vancouver (USA or Canada?)
I had various Yaesu xcvrs years ago. They are well made, but I found them difficult to use without having a user manual by my side at all times.
Good luck. 73's

I wish to listen to my Ham Radio Tranciever (Yaesu FT-847) through my PC Sound Card?
Yaesu FT-7 HF Transceiver 10W

My sound card is a Creative labs sound blaster live usb external 24 bit connected to a desktop pc running XP pro and creative labs 5.1 speakers

There are a couple of ways to do that. The easiest way is to simply feed the receive audio (e.g., from the headphone jack) to a line-level input of the sound card, with the volume set low enough to approximate a line-level signal. Some sound cards have an input jack that can be configured as either a line-level input or a mic-level input, so configure it accordingly.

A much more impressive way to connect a ham radio transceiver to a sound card is to tap an intermediate frequency (IF) of your radio and feed it to a Softrock software defined radio (SDR), which feeds magnitude (I) and phase (Q) information to the sound card. SDR software, such as Rocky or PowerSDR is used to interpret the I and Q signals. The SDR software can produce spectral displays, waterfall displays, and demodulate digital modes, such as PSK31, as well as demodulating audio, so you'd get vastly more information than just the sound from the particular signal to which you're tuned. Check out the Yahoo group Softrock40 for more info.

How do I install, and properly ground, a Yaesu Ft-8800r ham radio as a base unit?
Yaesu FT-225RD VHF Transceiver

I'm planning to install my FT-8800r as a base unit. Ive got an Astron RS-12A Power Supply and a Diamond X-30 antenna. I am confused over proper grounding, particularly of the antenna and its supporting mast. My ideal setup would be to have the antenna mounted on the edge of the roof (using brackets to mount a mast to running up the wall with the antenna mounted to that mast just above roof line) with the coax running through a window to the radio. What considerations do I need to make regarding grounding? Any other advice?

ARRL.org is an excellent site for getting started in ham radio. The link below has all the information you should need on grounding your antenna. Good luck and enjoy.
