I have an 8 ohm JL Audio car subwoofer that has been in my car. Since selling my car, I would really like to use the subwoofer as it sounds great. I want to use this in my home, but unsure on how to hook it up. I know that home theaters or home audio use an 8 ohm impedence. What do I need to do to hook up the subwoofer to the receiver?
I know it is direct w/speaker wire, but I want to do it via my LFE connection on the back of my receiver (which is 1 wire).
You will need a powered amplifier, single channel, or two channel bridgeable and stable at 8 ohms. It will be another component to your home stereo. You should be able to find one at your favorite electronics store, or somewhere like crutchfield.com. Connect everything, should be an "RCA" coming from your receiver, and standard speaker wires from the amp, and now you have huge sound effects for your movies.
how to wire a dual voice coil sub 8 ohm to a 2 ch amp bridged www.youtube.com
consider ohms law. I=v/r the voltage in this instance is a constant. 4 ohm is going to experiance twice the current. Should be built for that hopefully. The best subs will be able to deal with a high current load and not tear when you overload it. (as you will) if your amp expects 8 ohm load and it drives into 4 ohm... your amp melts. planning ARE WE? there are 2 ohm subs. subs reactivitity can be more important than base watts... deliver the actual sounds requested or muddy it all up since the voice coil cant react fast enough under that load... or you burn the speaker and the amp, possible the car. Dedicated amp for the subs and as well the base? think about that. And put rubber grommets on your damn liscense plate. I tire of hearing the rattle.

im going to buy a subwoofer for my home theater and found out that the output power of the home theater is 8 ohms, the only car amps i can find only put out 4 ohms, is there any way i can make the 4 ohm amp work with my 8 ohm home theater, the speaker im hooking to it is the subwoofer output, the subwoofer i want is 8 ohms too, i can get a 4 ohm subwoofer that is very nice but i just dont know what to do
Just because a car amp accepts 4 ohm doesn't mean it can't accept 8 ohm, the only thing is the power will be cut in half.
To overcome this, get an amp that's double the power @ 4 ohm so when you connect 8 ohm to it, the power will match.

i am buying an 8 ohm subwoofer because my home theaters speaker output is only 8 ohms and if i get anything higher or lower than 8 ohms it wont work well so i am also planning on getting an amp for it too because without it the subwoofer would only make like barely any vibrations so i am looking over some and i cant decide whether i should buy one specifically for your home or one for your car, the ones for your car are way more powerfull and cheaper but the ones for the house have way less wattage and cost like too much, so i found a few car amps but the only problem is they only support 2ohms and 4ohms, will it still work if i use the 8 ohm speaker? or if i get two 4 ohms and that will add up to the 8 ohm home theater output?
I'm not certain what you’re asking, so I'll try to answer your question the best I can.
1)If you’re buying a sub for your HT, it is advisable to use the rated impedance recommended. Using a 4 Ohm woofer may be too much of a load for your system, causing your amp to fail. So yes, putting two 4 Ohm woofers in series (Amp+)--(+woof-)----(+woof-)--(-Amp) could be an option.
2)High power speakers does not always equate to louder ones. It just means they can handle the rated amount of power without blowing out. Look at the sensitivity as well. An 87dB/Watt speaker will require twice as much power to produce the same sound level as a 90dB/Watt speaker.
3)An automotive power amp used in an HT system will require a 12 Volt source to operate. That is not cost effective option.

You need to wire up each sub-woofer as an 8ohm load, in stereo to your amp. Use a Y adapter to wire your sub woofer output on your system, because bass isn't played in stereo. Most single coil sub-woofers are sold as 8 ohms, meant to be bridged.
Keep the woofers far away from your TV, because the strong magnets mess up the picture.
what does all this mean in simpler terms... ive got the y adaptor, but do i connect my stereo 2 my subwoofer through the speaker ports or what?
You need a separate house amp or receiver with RCA inputs, and your stereo or TV needs to have a separate sub-woofer output. Hook up the subs to the amp, in stereo. Then, plug in your Y adapter in to your TV or stereo and connect the Y adapter to your RCA cables. Hook up the RCA cables to the amp or receiver, and your done!
He's trying to connect car subs to a house stereo Chevy, not fry his house amp. 8 ohms is all those amps can handle. I have the same set up in my garage.

MB Quart 1450 Sub amp with Dayton QT210-4 8quot; subwoofer - DIY ...
One of the primary design concerns was the need to have the driver's seat fully to the rear without interfering with the operation of the sub at full excursion. Due a fairly shallow mount depth many of the 10" drivers I was looking at were to deep. The mount depth on the Dayton is 4". I had to countersink the speaker cutout 1/4" so that it could sit flush with the outer edge of the box and would not interfere with the seat. I didn't countersink the cutout until I realized the speaker would limit seat travel. The recommended enclosures are .2-.5 cubic feet sealed. So my application is slightly larger than recommended. Comparing this to my stepson's IDQ12 the Dayton can hit...
