Car Audio Amplifiers Answers
car amplifiers, the only thing that confuses me in car audio. I need an amp that can push 500 x 2 at four ohms. The only thing is .. some amps are more expensive than others. i know it has alot to do with brand names, however i still get confused. For example, there is this one brand named ultra linear, that does 600 x 2 rms at for ohms that i can get for like 110. A rockford amp of the same quota, would have to be at least 600 dollars. someone help?
Ok first off in car audio you get what you pay for.A cheap amp that says 600x2 is more thand likly a 60 watts x2 rather then 600x2.Or like when you see a amp and it says 1000 watts on the top and is only 200 bucks. Its more like 50 watts x2 making it a 100 watt amp.Thats how they get you to buy one. When really if you just look at the specs it will tell you the truth. To put it simpler figure 1 dollar per watt is what it usally means. So a real 500 watt amp is going to be 500 bucks. Now when you buy an amp make sure that you get the true wattage of the amp if you look in the fine print of the specs of an amp you will see this for example.500 watts x 2
at 14.4 volts rather than 12 volts this means that the amp will perform 500 watts X 2 if the ampage stays at 14.4 volts which in a factory car that doesnt have an extra battery and a high out put alternator this will not be producing the proper wattage unless there is a high output alternater in place. The amp will cause the lights to dim at night because of the current draw on an amp. Many people still add a big amp to there car even though this draws current from the cars electrical system. My thoughts on this is it will wear out the alternator or battery sooner then it should.I know this from first hand intsalling systems in cars for the public.Ok now onto ohms.If you wish to have an amp run to 4 ohms then you must have 2 speakers that are 8 ohms this brings the impetance of the amp down to 4 ohms and you get the 500x2 that you are looking for.You cant do this unless you have 8 ohm speakers.Ok now amp brands Rockford Fosgate is a company that has been around for over 20 years and they are one of the best companies to deal with as far as amps go.There are many more that are also as good as they are some a little more expesive. The most inportant thing is to figure this do I want to make big boom or do i want to be able to make unsterstand what i am listening to.This is where you have to look on the amp and see if the amp that you want has a built in crossover on it so you can tune it to the type of speakers that you want to.im guess you want to put this amp onto a set of subs. Then you will have to adjust the built in crossover to 80hz and below so you can get thebest beats of your music.Make sure that your not over powering your front speakers with this set up that way you dont have more bass the treble in you music.Good luck and hope this helps.
Im planning to have four JBL GTO607C components on my car powered by a Sony XM-554ZR amplifier. The JBL components are rated at 2 ohms and the amplifier specs say it can be tuned to 2 or 4 ohms. Can someone clarify if amplifiers will have switches to change the output at 2/4 ohms and will a 2 ohm amplifier to a 2 ohm speaker will drain my car battery ?
Some amps are able to switch ohms. I looked up the info on that amp and its stable at 2 ohms. 65w x 4 @ 2ohms. So run the components right into the amp, they will be going in @ 2 ohms. You should be fine just make sure to set the gains and the crossovers on the high pass, becouse you dont want the low frequiences. As fas as the 2ohms pulling more current, Im not sure it will pull more, but i dont think it will. Components dont pull as much as a sub. You should be fine.

Can any one explain me what is the different between 1 channel, 2 channel or more in car amplifiers?
Each "channel" in an amplifier can produce a different sound. If you're listening to stereo music, then a 2-channel amp can reproduce separate left and right stereo signals. If you're listening to stereo music on four speakers (a typical vehicle configuration) the a 4-channel amp gives you separate left and right signals, and the ability to make the front louder than the rear (or vice versa).
You can connect as many speakers as you want to a single amplifier channel, as long as you remember two things: the total power output will be split among all the speakers, and you can't go below the minimum impedance (ohms) rating of the amplifier. In this way, you could (for example) connect four speakers to a 2-channel amp. If the speakers are identical, then the two left speakers will play the exact same sound at the same volume, and the right speakers will play the same sound at the same volume.
Most multi-channel amps are "bridgeable". That means that you can combine two channels into a single channel with more power. In this way, a 2-channel amp can become a mono amp, and a 4-channel amp can become a 2-channel amp.
Subwoofers usually perform best if they're playing in mono. Deep bass is non-directional; you can't really tell where it's coming from, so there's no need for a left & right stereo effect. They also require more power than smaller speakers. With subwoofers, it's usually best if every sub is playing the exact same signal. That's why subwoofers are normally used with mono amps, or bridged 2-channel amps.

What do you guys think about power ACOUSTIC car amplifiers? Please Rate their performance and Rate their RMS rating. Are Refurbished Kicker Amplifiers worth the money, $400.
Personally, I think Power Acoustik is crap. So do alot of people I know in car audio. Their amps do about 80% rated power. That means if it is rated at 100 watts RMS per channel, it will do about 80 per channel. If you can get the refurb cheap enough, I would get it, if it was refurb'ed by Kicker. Most of the time a brand new is one is only a little more.
I just recieved a 1000 watt cummings 4 channel amplifier for my car, number 5263. Anyhow I have been trying to do research on this amp and I can't find anything. The woman who gave me the amp claims its only 6 months old. I can find anything online about the cummings brand amplifiers. I was trying to find a price on it, because I got this amp as partial trade for selling my car. Any info would be great! Thank you!
Maybe they do exist, but I've been around car audio for a long time, & I haven't heard of it, but w/ that said try some websites for car audio, if not, it maybe used to exist.
