I have not been able to directly find the answer if a solar powered battery maintainer that charges very slowly can overcharge a car battery? It is for a car that isn't driven very much, and we are in MN and need to have a good charge on the battery to start the car.
Thanks for any help! The product I purchased make no claims that it won't overcharge - it's one of those made in China things from Fleet Farm store.
I keep one in my car (also in MN) and have never had a problem with overcharging.

It has been pretty cold here, and I don't drive my car very often right now- like once a week. Due to the temperature, the car's battery does not have enough charge to start the powerplant after a week. I have seen solar battery maintainers on the internet, but can I make one myself? I have a small solar panel that is 1.83V and 500mA. I also have an old car cellphone charger with two wires. Is there any way I can use the solar panel connected to the charger, plugged into my DC port in the car?
To keep a fully charged battery fully charged, you'd need at least 300ma at 13 volts.

I have a small solar car battery charger/maintainer which puts out about 23 volts on a sunny day. The amperage and wattage are low but could this higher voltage damage the battery?
Thanks!
23 volts is a tad too high. You could probably get away with it because the solar panel produces miniscule currents but personally I would place a small resistor (eg. 62ohms) in series with the circuit to reduce the voltage.

Works with automobile, motorcycle, tractor, boat batteries and more
Made of durable ABS plastic and amorphous solar cells
Built-in blocking diode to prevent reverse discharge
For indoor use--solar panel is not waterproof
Charges 12-volt batteries and creates 1.8 watts of energy
i have a short in my car battery. i probably do not have enough to have it fixed. i saw that they have solar powered battery maintainers that hold a charge in my battery. if i charge the battery completely, then use it, will it keep my car running all the time? im tired of having to jump it. its a 95 dodge avenger ES. i dontthink its computer powered if it matters.
ive already been through 3 batteries and altenators. im 90% sure its a short. so im wondering if this is an alternative until i can afford fixing the short. so how about some real answers because there is obviously a reason im asking, im not an idiot.
buy a BATTERY
My 2007 Suburban often spends all day at events where the constant opening and closing of the power hatch, running of inside lights, and running of the on-board computer kills the battery. If I remember to start it every few hours and run it for a bit them I'm fine, but this is a pain and when I forget then I need a jump.
I thought about various dual battery schemes, but would still be limited to what two batteries can supply.
So, I will buy a Honda eu1000i generator to power all of my other equipment and a battery charger or maintainer to keep the 'burb happy. But do I have to care which battery charger/maintainer I use? Some of them only deliver 1 amp which may not be enough to keep the 'burb charged - others may deliver too much or may get their internal charging algorithms confused by the fact that I am also discharging the battery at the same time? Not sure how to do this exactly, please advise.
