harman kardon speakers

I have a new gateway computer with vista. I am trying to use speakers that came with my old dell computer. I have plugged them in, and the Sigmatel program says "jack is in" but no sound comes out. I have googled and Im not computer savvy, so I have no clue what all the techinal jumbo means! Help!

Are the speakers plugged into the correct jack? Do the speakers have more than one wire to plug in and again are they plugged in correctly? If a single connector make sure it is plugged into the green jack on your sound card.

Speakers dont have drivers. You just plug them into your sound card or your motherboard if it has onboard audio. You download drivers for those.

It really annoying so annoying im using my ear phones now i have 2 sets both don't work. Didn't work with old pc either also the harman/kardon are the real old ones maybe 8 or 9 years and if there shot can you point me in the direction of speakers for less then 50$ but perferably cheaper.

If we set up the Harman Kardon AVR 146 with only left, center and right channels (and subwoofer) but no surround speakers (with the setting in the receiver set to None), what will happen with a 5.1 source? The receiver still selects Dolby Digital Mode and all the five channels light up in the display. Should I select Dolby 3-channel Virtual Ref mode if I dont want to lose the surround signals?

Go into the speaker setup section of the On screen display and set "surround" to "none". The receiver will then redirect the sound headed for the surround channels and mix it into the front left and right so that you will not miss out on any sound effects. The "SL" and "SR" will still light up on the main display of the receiver, however, they won't be surrounded by a box.

Note: There may be some slight variation to the way your front panel display looks after this. This is how the *45 series of Harman Kardon receivers shows this information. Provided you have turned the surround speakers off, you have it set correctly.

My speakers generally only work one at a time, headphones in or not. So I always have a pair hooked up, and I push down on the plug and both work. But it's gotten to the point where I let off and the same one works, but the other doesn't. So I have to keep something with about 4 ounces of weight on the jack to keep both working. Anything I need to replace to keep both working? Or would I be better off replacing the set? If so, what's a good pair to replace it with that does have a headphone plug-in?
These were the speakers that came with the Dell Optiplex gx150 desktop computers. Just to clarify.

From your description, I don't think it is the speakers. It sounds more like a problem with the speaker jack in your device. Plug in some earphones or something to see if they misbehave in any way. If so, you'll know the problem is with the jack.

If you are real good with a soldering iron, you can perhaps replace the jack yourself. However, since replacement is often not that easy to do with modern electronics, you may want to take it to a pro if you have any doubts whatsoever about your repair skills.
