Car DVD Players Answers
I am going on a trip and would like to use my car's cigarette lighter for multiple accessories such as GPS, Cell Phone Charger, Radar Detector, Laptop charger, and Portable DVD Player. To use all of these accessories through my cigarette lighter adapters, would my car's alternator use some of my gas as well? Does the car's alternator use gas on a normal basis? If so, how much gas would it use? Would there be any disadvantages of using all of these accessories at the same time using a cigarette lighter splitter? Thank You!
Technically, the alternator is gas driven, but its not per say. The alternator is a seperate unit that is bolted to the engine. It is driven by a belt, that is driven off of the crank pulley, that turns when the engine is running (using fuel, this is where I mean technically). The alternator is keeping the battery at a constant charge, I wouldn't worry about wasting any gas on the alternator because it is always running when the engine is running, it is hooked up in time to the engine, as the engine turns, the alternator generates current to keep the battery charged.
There is no extra fuel involved in the alternator running. However, I would be concerned of running all the extra power drains. If they (are used at the same time and) have a large(r) power drain, the alternator may not be able to create enough electrical energy to keep the battery charged up. This may cause the battery to go dead, or this may overload the alternators maximun compasity and burn your alternator out. Before you go on the trip, i would suggest having an chraging system check, and a vehicle inspection preformed to make sure your vehicle is in proper running order and wont leave you stranded in the middle of no wehre.

I'm looking to buy a portable DVD player and want to know which of the brands below are better as they're on special at the moment.I'm looking for 1 that is long lasting and worth my money.Below are the details that are listed in the catalogues and I would appreciate any help from anyone.
Chevron 17cm (7') portable dvd player:
*2 hour lithium battery (is it rechargeable)
*Built in anti-shock system,
*built in 2 channel speakers
* includes Remote
RRP:$118
You have to buy an accessory pack separately which is $20.
Base Portable DVD player:
17.5cm (7')
Built in Rechargeable battery
*includes car charger,headrest,mounting bag,
remote and earphones.
RRP:$99
Which one do you think is worth my money.I want to run it off the battery but also the power cable too.I'm leaning towards the chevron but i don't want something that will breakdown in a few years. Can anyone help?
Anybody's opinion would be appreciated
You may want to check your nearest Radio Shack, Walmart, Target, Sears. Don't buy it from a auto part store. Think of warranty or extended warranty, All battery packs that comes with the DVD player is rechargeable. Lithium battery is longer lasting than NiCd, or NiMd.
But for this argument, I'm leaning on the Chevron. First the battery is of a better technology and lasts longer, has an anti-shock system. The down part, is that the costs, plus you gotta buy a car charger, which comes in the accessory pack. If you can get an extended warranty for this item, get it.
Good Luck

Well I want to use my portable DVD player in my car so I want to know how long I will have to watch the movie before my car dies.
Now I can't leave my car running coz my car's too loud (after market pipes) so I'm wondering if my car's battery will last long enough to watch the movie. I will have the keys turned back in accessory mode to power the outlets. I had the battery replaced a few months ago so it's fairly new.
Oh and also what if I had the car stereo on to listen to the movie through an auxiliary port? How much time would I have there?
The battery that came with the player doesn't work so I can't charge it.
THANKS!!!!
The portable DVD player probably doesn't use much power so it should last all day. The only way to be really sure is to hook a good accurate digital multimeter to the battery and watch the display on it while the DVD is playing inside and count the number of hours it takes to go from the fully charged resting voltage of 12.6-12.9 down to 12.00 which is 50% discharged.
I wouldn't do it very often though since unless you have a true deep cycle battery you will kill it with a few deep cycles from running accessories. Common cheap starting batteries have lots of thin pasted lead plates for maximum lead to acid surface area contact so that they can provide the amps needed to crank the engine. Deep cycle batteries have fewer plates that are either mostly solid or are a thick paste and each one is thicker for maximum active material and maximum amp hour capacity. The problem with lead acid batteries is that when they are cycled (run down and recharged) the plates shed some material which falls to the bottom of the cells and becomes useless. Starting batteries shed material much faster because the paste isn't very strong and after a few deep cycles the plates will either have nothing but the grid left or the paste that was shed will build up in the bottom of the cell until it bridges between 2 plates and shorts it out.
