Can any 15 inch PA or bass speaker work with any 15" bass cabinet?

Ive blown 2 speakers and I need to replace them. One was for a peavey 1x15 cab and the other for a no name 1x15 cab. What types of 15" speakers are compatible? I found these ones that are 300 watt rms and 8 ohms. I suppose different wattages can go into these cabs than the originals right?
Its a peavey mark vi amplifier, runs 250 watts at 4 ohms and 400 at 2. I was running at 8 ohms with a 150 watt handling rms speaker that was no name.

Hey....

First: RMS (Root Mean Square) is defined as the square root of the time average of the SQUARE of instantaneous power. Basically, RMS power is MEANINGLESS. It has no technical significance. It does not measure heating power.Sine wave cycles is how wattage is properly measured, and over LONG periods of time, not the square root of a square of time. One big difference between the two: Over long periods of time, the heating power of an amplifier is measured.

A common misconception is that "watts" is how loud something gets. That is totally incorrect. Example: Light bulbs come in watts, but most think watts is what makes it brighter. Its lumens actually that measure how bright a light bulb is. Micro-wave ovens is another example. 800 watt ovens dont put out 120 decibals of volume. Its heat that is being measured.

Now.. on to your dilemma. lol...You said you have blown 2 speakers. What is the source that these speakers was hooked up to, and, how do you know that it is functioning properly? You dont list what brand of speakers they were, other than they were 15's. I have a "no name" cab that has JBL 15's in them, and am confident of my power source. If anything, underpowering speakers will cause more harm than overpowering them. The JBL's have a peak rating of 1200 watts, and im powering them with a QSC 5050 power amp. My load is 8 ohms to the power amp, and it delivers 3200 watts. By the way.. I dont use this bass rig on small bar stages!

Might consider editing this post with what you are using to power the speakers, and, what particular speakers and models that were blown.

EDIT: I remember that bass head. What a beast! Built in chorus was kinda nice on that too. Ok.... couple things could have come into play with blowing speakers. The input gain (pre) could have been driven to hard, while the master gain (post) was hardly up. As a rule of thumb, I run on all my bass rigs the master or post at TEN! Alot of times people will turn up the preamp to much, the volume not enough. What winds up happening is the input is clipped, a distorted signal then winds up going to the main power, which then is sent to the speakers. Another scenario is this: If that amp has Hi and Low inputs, and your bass has active eq, (9 volt battery) you should be plugging into the low input. That input is reduced by usually 6db to compensate for the hotter pickups and eq on basses. You CAN plug into the high input with an active bass, but you have to know a thing or two about gain structure to prevent things blowing up!

Wouldnt hurt to be on the safe side to have a tech look at the amp, assuming none of the above apply. A couple of good 15" bass speakers worth checking out that will stand up to a good beating is Eminence, Black Widow, JBL, (my favorite) and Electro Voice.

Hope this has helped, and good luck!

HI DOES A 1200W PEAK,600W RMS 18 INCH HOME SPEAKER HAVE MORE BASS THAN A DUAL 12 OR 15" TOWER?

im looking to buy a pair of house speakers that are 1200 watts peak each 18 inch subs 3 way cabinets...would these be louder bass wise than a pair of dual 12 or 15 inch tower speakers rated at same wattage...another words..which one will deliver more bass? four 15's or two 18's also would a 1500 watt max,750 watt rms be a good receiver/amp to push the 18's rated at 1200 watt,600 watt rms? thankyou

In theory the larger surface area combo will 'give more bass', BUT there are many considerations.

First, big spekaers are good for low bass frequencies, but not so good for higher bass, so big is not necessarily best. Audiophiles will often opt for a 10" or 12" sub over a 15" because of 'better' sound for that reason.

Second, the excursion on the speaker cone (how far in and out it can move) along with the cone and surround materials can make a huge difference.

Third, the watt rating of speakers is their capacity not their requirement. That is determined by the speaker efficiency .. and varies widely.

Fourth, the type and size of bass speakers should take into account the type of use. For example you want big subs for organ music, but may be better with smaller versions for more delicate music (e.g. vocal, jazz, piano).

Fifth, your question is somewhat confusing since you talk about subs with 3 way cabinets and tower speakers. Which are you considering subwoofers or full range tower speakers? They aren't the same.

Sixth, bass is problematic in rooms so plan on more than one subwoofer and/or buying/building bass traps to eliminate resonances and inequalities.

Finally, you presumably want a balanced sound, so unless you have a huge room and/or want low bass from organ music at realistic levels I doubt you need 18" or even 15" woofers.

My suggestion is to look at an integrated speaker setup based on room size, music/movie style and stop focusing on the bass alone.

Hey! Do any bass players know if 10 inch speakers can handle a low B on a bass?

I'm planning on getting a Schecter Studio 5. Now, I want a decent amp, but I really like a crisp sound and wanted an Ampeg 2x10. I think it would sound cleaner than a 15 inch. I'm just concerned the smaller speakers might not be able to handle a low B with such powerful electronics behind it. So yeah if you have any experience, please let me know. Thanks.

You're right - a 10" speaker isn't going to help you very much in terms of low end. 10" speakers give you a punchy mid-range and clear highs, but they don't project bass frequencies very well. If you still wanted your sound more "crisp", you could try a 4x10" cabinet - it wouldn't be as portable as a 2x10", but you'd have a slightly better low end simply because more speakers = more air movement.
Yes, a 15" speaker would give you the defined low end you're looking for, but at the expense of a lot of high end.

The best thing I can suggest to you is get two cabinets. Most amplifiers only run at their full power at 4 ohms (and most cabinets run at 8 ohms), so you could do this - hook your amplifier up to a 2x10" (or 4x10") cab and a 1x15" cab - that way, you'd probably be getting more juice out of your amp, and your tone would be much more well-rounded.
You can also get 1x18" cabinets, which would have an even better low end than a 1x15" (though proportionally less mid-high range). However, these can be hard to find and pretty expensive. 4x10" cabs can also be a bit more expensive than 2x10"s or 1x15"s.

A good alternative to getting a 2x10" + 1x15" would be to get a 2x12" cabinet. 12" speakers are sort of in between 10" and 15" speakers, both in size and tone. If you don't really want to buy two separate cabinets, I would recommend this.

Hope that helps a bit, and that you find what you need =)
Cheers

would it be to much bass if I mounted two 15 inch subwoofers pushing 2,000w each in a 1996 Dodge Ram pickup?

I have the room for the boxs behind the seats but will the bass overpower the rest of the speakers(2 pair of 6-1/2 inch components) in the doors and between the sub boxs.
I'm running 200w to each of my components. Thinking about mounting 2 more sets of components in ported boxs under my seats firing forward for added sound.

More than likely it's going to overpower your voice speakers. 4000w of bass is a lot of bass plus you got 2 15's so thats super loud on the lows. It would be best to upgrade your voice speakers add some tweeters and power your voice speakers with an individual amp rather that your stereo.

1x 15 or 4x 10 bass amp?

Im a bassist who is interested in a sound similar to Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 and Mike Dirnt from Green Day. Would you suggest a 250 wat amp with 4x 10 inch speakers or a 250 wat 1x 15 inch speaker with a horn? Ive played both, but I cant make this decision...

4 x 10.
I have played bass for 17 years.
Nothing sounds like a crisp 4 x 10 Hartke cabinet with aluminum cones. (They last a lot longer.)
I also play through a Hartke 350 watt amp. (they say it is better to match your head to your cabinet.)
The 4 x 10's cut through a mix far better than a 1 x 15.
PS- I have played through a 1 x 15 prior to getting the 4 x 10.
With the 1 x 15 no one even knew I was playing. (Not loud enough and sharp enough to cut through the mix.)

It is also recommended that your amp be 2x the watts of your guitar player to cut through and be heard.
