yes you can . You may loose some top end volume but you will gain Quality as long as you stick around the same speaker wattage

Car stereo speakers, 2 ohm versus 4 ohm.....?

So I'm looking at picking up a set of speakers for my car. Although I'm not too sure if I'm too look at 2 ohm speakers or 4 ohm. What is the difference?

You need to match your impedance (2 ohm or 4 ohm) to the capabilities of the amplifier, be it your head unit or other amplifier. Typically you're safe with 4 ohm and 8 ohm. 2 ohm can over heat your amplifier if it's not capable of support that low of an impedance.

Need help with car speakers - 2 ohms with an aftermarket deck

Ok, here we go...

I have a 97 Prelude with 2 ohm rear speakers. I bought a Pioneer DEH-P4000UB deck today and when the sound gets too loud, the speakers cut in and out. I asked the Circuit City guy about it and he said it's because the speakers are 2 ohms and the deck and/or amp is running on 4 ohms so the speakers are being fed more power than they can handle. I understood this fine and accepted it... until I was looking for aftermarket speakers to replace the old ones.

I came across the JBL GTO927 6"x9" speakers and under the details, I found this little piece of info: 2-ohm impedance for extra power (compatible with all factory or aftermarket car stereos)

If these 2-ohm speakers are compatible with anything, why are mine cutting out? Why do these supply more power than 4-ohm speakers?

Thanks

You'll only get more power out of 2 ohms speakers if they're matched to a 2 ohm output impedence amplifier. When you hook up a 4 ohm amp to 2 ohm speakers you have an impedence mismatch.

Matched Z = max. P transfer.

i have a harley with a 2 ohm speaker system, can i run 4 ohm speakers without any problems?

2006 harley davidson electraglide, with a Harman Kardon system with 2 ohm speakers, since its a little tough to find 2 ohm speakers sometimes, i was wondering if you could run 4 ohm car audio speakers with it. I am not running an amp, there is a Harley amp to go with the system, but that is also rated for 2 ohm speakers.

They will work no problem, but as another answer said, they may not be as loud. You get into trouble when your speakers are a lower impedance than what the amp is rated for; that could fry your stereo.

what is the proper way to instal 2.5 ohms speakers to a 4 ohms car stereo.?

the out put is 4 ohms 50 x 4 and the Speakers that i bought are 2.5 ohms 100 RMS 300Watts, 6x9 for the rear i connected it normally but theres distortion at about half way the volume, no amp.

if you dont want to change the speakers you will need to get an amp installed so that they are properly powered

Clipping
Clipping occurs when an amplifier is asked to deliver more current to a speaker than the amp is capable of doing. When an amplifier clips, it literally cuts off the tops and bottoms of the musical waveforms that it's trying to reproduce, thus the term. This introduces a huge amount of distortion into the output signal.
