3 inch car speakers

I have 2 Alpine 6x9 inch coaxial 3 way speakers with 120 watts peak and 30 watts RMS clearly made for a car but i dont want to put them in my car. instead id like to be able to use them as speakers for my computer and connect them to a headphone jack so i can plug them into any computer. what materials and methods do i need and is this even possible?

You could do it, but you'd need an external amplifier to run the speakers. The output of the headphone jacks on most computers/sound cards usually only outputs like 1.5watts etc. And most speakers for Desktops or ones that you connect to a laptop have built in amplifiers.

The other issue at hand is that the speakers have some strong magnets. So you would need to build an enclosure that would not allow the magnets to leave the enclosure so you won't do damage to the laptop/desktop's hard drivers or any magnet media that comes into contact with the speakers(Floppy disks, hard drivers, tape drive media etc...)

I've looked at a few like the Polk DB351 3.5" Coaxial Car Speakers and the Infinity Reference 3022cf 3.5-Inch Two-Way Loudspeakers, from what I've researched, Polk speakers aren't all that great. If you have any comments about these speakers or can recommend any other speakers please let me know. Thanks.

you might want to consider cutting th hole to add 6x9's or installing tweetrs in my opinion both of thise brands are good

Well it depends on a lot of things. What is your budget, and how well do you want them to sound. Also what size slots does your cars front speakers have. 5.25", 6.5".. etc.

If you dont have an amp, it really doesnt matter what speakers you will get because you wont have anything to power them, and they will all sound about the same.

For a fairly cheap pair of superb speakers i would get the Infinity Reference speakers. You can get them in different sizes and if your cars slots are shallow you can get shallow mount speakers so they fit in almost any vehicle.
Go to crutchfield.com, and put your car in and it will show you what speakers fit in your car. Then you can prolly get them on ebay for under $80

I would highly recommend you get an amplifier if you dont already have one.

So I have a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I went on Crutchfield.com and they allowed me to input the type of my car and I thought they would only list the speakers that fit my car. Turns out I was wrong and I bought 5 1/4 inch speakers instead of 6 3/4 inch speakers. How can I improvise this to make these speakers fit?? Do they sell circular plates to make them fit? Thanks

can u exchange them 61/2 is better then 51/4. but you can have a carpenter make an adaptor as long as you can get the ring flat on the door panel, try a car audio shop and see what they say or like rj says look for an adaptor mabey on say crutchfield even radio shack may have something

As long as they fit into the pre excisting holes you should be fine, don't let magnets touch anything or this will distort. also not over powered for the radio that is installed and you should be fine.
