I have 2 Alpine 6x9 inch coaxial 3 way speakers with 120 watts peak and 30 watts RMS clearly made for a car but i dont want to put them in my car. instead id like to be able to use them as speakers for my computer and connect them to a headphone jack so i can plug them into any computer. what materials and methods do i need and is this even possible?
You could do it, but you'd need an external amplifier to run the speakers. The output of the headphone jacks on most computers/sound cards usually only outputs like 1.5watts etc. And most speakers for Desktops or ones that you connect to a laptop have built in amplifiers.
The other issue at hand is that the speakers have some strong magnets. So you would need to build an enclosure that would not allow the magnets to leave the enclosure so you won't do damage to the laptop/desktop's hard drivers or any magnet media that comes into contact with the speakers(Floppy disks, hard drivers, tape drive media etc...)

or is it better to have 4- six and a half inch speakers all the way around?
Its a good setup. Just get 3 way 6.5s and 6x9s that way you dont have to get tweeters.

If we're talking about installing these in the rear deck -- there really is no right or wrong answer.
Proper sound staging should be front-focused. Your rear speakers are there for rear-fill, they're not there to be the focal point of your system. With the direction the sound waves have to travel from your rear speakers - by the time you hear it, it's traveled in so many directions that it really doesn't matter if it was an oval or round speaker source whatsoever.

I have a 2009 Accord with 6 speakers. I want to replace the stock 6 1/2 inch rear speakers by 6x9 after market speakers. Now the problem is that, there is a circular cut on the metal sheet in which the 6 1/2 inch speaker sits. There is no way I can fit the 6x9 speakers without having to cut the metal sheet in oval/egg shape. I don't want to do that metal cutting stuff. Can I just screw the 6x9 speakers around the circular cut? off course I will have to drill new holes in the metal, which I am fine with. Will that affect the sound coming from 6x9 speakers? Kindly let me know if you have other solutions..
as long as it is sealed you should have no problem. what i mean by sealed is that any space exposed with the 6x9's that normally wouldnt with the 6.5" is completely filled.
I am replacing my stock speakers in my Buick century with higher quality after market speakers. The front doors are 5 1/4 inch speakers and the rear deck holds 6x9 inch speakers. I am replacing both with Polk audio 5 1/4's and 6x9's. Altogether I'm paying about $170.00 an I'm buying from www.crutchfield.com. I have heard that these speakers sound a lot better with an amplifier powering them. I don't know much about amplifiers so I would like to know what would be a good, reasonably priced amplifier to power these speakers with.
10-100 watts RMS for the 6x9's and 4-45 watts RMS for the 5 1/4
I have a kicker zx and an sx and am prettty happy with them. They are a decently priced, and so far no problems. Crutchfields has pretty good customer service. They should be able to give you some different options.
heres an option for a 4 channel on http://www.crutchfield.com/S-BUjfWxZO5xJ /cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=206ZX3 504
and one 2 channel for the 5 1/4"

and one 2 channel for the 6x9's

I'd go with the single 4 channel to keep it looking clean if it was me. hope this helps a little
