I have found many automotive GPS systems for laptops, and have found aviation GPS systems for PDAs, but none for laptops so far. I was wondering if such a thing exists....
something I could use in conjunction with Chart Case Electronic Flight Bag, or one of the other EFBs.

My dad just got his pilot liscense and wants to get a GPS with weather updates for his plane. I have been going through alot of different systems and am having a hard time finding one specifically geared for aviation with weather updates, I would like to go below $1,000, but if I can't get a good one for that I would be willing to go higher. Also, what are service options for weather updates? I know of XM are there any others?
For $1,000 your only one in budget is a used Garmin 396. They are great. Has stormscope in it, Radar, cloud cover, radio, lots of very nice features. There are few panel mount systems that cost exponentially more that can do the same thing.
Artificial Horizion
GPS driven HSI
Altimeter
Velocimeter
AHRS interface
Ideally inexpensive, needed for VFR only. I'd be happy with a dot overlaid on a sectional.
I have a HTC TouchPro2.
Before I switched to a G1 I was using APIC from Approach Systems. It looks like it's no longer free, but I'd say it's as inexpensive as anything in aviation at $9.99. It provides a moving map display similar to the display on a Garmin aviation GPS unit.
Perfect sized 7" touch screen display
Complete AFD database
Approach Plates, Arrivals, Departures, Airport Diagrams, and more
View your location on actual Sectional, TAC, or Low-Enroute charts
Do I have to do any cabling or anything in the plane? or can I get it right away and put it in the plane and it works automatically?
Most portable aviation GPS's have an electical cord to power the unit that plugs into a cigarette lighter or similar outlet in the aircraft. You will not need to hook it up to any receivers in the aircraft, it has its own antennae and the like. The GPS will automatically pick up signal from GPS satellites in orbit. Portable GPS units are only certified for VFR flight however, because the the aircraft itself can block some of the signal due to the lack of an outside-mounted antennae and cause the unit to be slightly in error. This is not really a concern for navigating airport to airport VFR, but can become a concern for IFR flight.

In partnership with Hilton Software, the initial release includes applications for the Garmin GPSMAP 296, 396, 495, 496, 695 and 696 GPSs. “We are happy to extend our market-leading position on the iPhone by partnering with Glass Cockpit Publishing to create GPS Guides for the iPhone. The new GPS Guides offer unprecedented ease of use and eliminate fumbling through checklists.” said Dr. Hilton Goldstein, CEO of Hilton Software LLC.
