Adding a gps/depth to boat. The boat has a fishfinder on it already. Will the two transducers interfere with each other?
i added a Garmin unit that has a fishfinder which works better than the old fishfinder. the transducers will not interfer if you mount them several feet apart.

I plan to move my boat from a lake in PA. to the Hudson River to expand my cruising. I want to cruise he intercoastal waterway in the northeast eventually and take my boat to Cape Cod and Nantucket, where I vacation every year. Do I need a chartplotter or is a gps sufficient?
You do not need a chart plotter, but you do need charts. GPS is good but you still need charts and courses on navigation, tides and currents. Tides and currents in the Hudson run one way and in the East River the other. On the way t Nantuckett w found our GPS and compass differing by 45 degrees. It turned out there was such a current, the compass showed the direction the boat was pointing and the GPS showed the direction it was moving. Captain Eldridges Tides and Currents, updated every year, is handy.

I was wondering if it was possible to use a regular gps made for land in a boat. All I need to use it for is to see where land is and about how far. Is this possible?
thanks......
It is, but it is cumbersome. In fact, I have mine for sale right now and would like to replace it with a marine version. Here's why: My particular unit is designed for hikers. It gives your position in the form of lattitude and longitude, which you then plot on a chart. This is fine if you have a crew member to do this for you or take the helm while you plot (or have a auto-pilot, which I lack). If you are singlehanding your boat it becomes hazardous to leave the cockpit to do an accurate plot. A marine unit with charting capability shows you your position at a glance, and is therefore more convenient and also safer, in my opinion. I would still carry the appropriate paper charts, though, as a backup!

There are a bunch of Garmins available. I need one for use on my boat. Navigation points and charts are important. What should I get?
I'm looking at a handheld like the 76, but there are a lot to chose from!
It really depends on how much you want to spend. Bigger screens are the best, but there must be a dollar limit you have.
I bought the 450s for my boat, the screen is big enough and is preprogrammed with all the info I need, no chip necessary.

D#39;oh! Wrong GPS Coordinates Cause Pleasure Boat to Slam Into ...
I sometimes post news about people who put too much faith in GPS technology; these items get placed in the D’oh! Files. In this instance, it wasn’t the accuracy of GPS or directions from a sat nav that was trusted too much, but rather operator error. If you’re going to run around with your boat on autopilot, um, you might want to double check and make you ENTER THE COORDINATES CORRECTLY.
says, citing the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.
The 21-foot boat was traveling between 30 mph and 40 mph when it crashed into the west breakwall outside of Conneaut, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie, missing the harbor by about a half a mile. Says Ohio Division of Watercraft investigator Jim Gorman: “We haven’t gotten a chance to talk to the operator, but he probably forgot the breakwall was there. It’s a common thing people forget, since GPS systems don’t take into account things like breakwalls and piers.”
