I mainly need a GPS for road travel and also to remember the boating route from the boat dock as a starting point. I want to be able to use the GPS to get back to the boat dock after a day of riding the boat on the lake.

What's the best handheld GPS for boating? It would be nice to optionally plug the GPS into a laptop to use with other software.

I recently bought a boat with a Garmin GPS unit installed. I looked it up, and it is a $900 unit, but the tracking and detail are terrible.
I boat near LaCrosse WI, and according to the GPS unit, half the time I am on dry land. Garmin says they do not have any software that is any better. Has any one purchased a add on map that works on the upper Mississippi river ?

Adding a gps/depth to boat. The boat has a fishfinder on it already. Will the two transducers interfere with each other?

i added a Garmin unit that has a fishfinder which works better than the old fishfinder. the transducers will not interfer if you mount them several feet apart.

Which GPS unit should I get. I plan to be doing some boating in the Long Island / New York City area.

I need a unit that is portable between two boats, inexpensive, and will have simple functionality to show me where I am and where the buoys and navigable areas are.
