My car has a v-kool athermic heat blocker (v-70) installed on the front windshield. When I installed my Mio P350 GPS device I found that it's not able to lock on to any satellites.
Will an external GPS antenna kept INSIDE the car help in locking on to satellites. Or will it have to be placed outside the car?

I have an antenna for my own mio, and although it did work inside the car, the connection was easily interrupted (nothing that i can specifically pin it down to) but once i placed it outside it worked perfectly. It's magnetic and waterproof.

This is similar to the one I got but it's cheaper!

I want to use the GPS and maps on my Nokia N95 with an external GPS antenna when I'm in the car.

Ideally, I'd like a waterproof, battery-powered magnetic antenna that sticks (strongly!) on the roof and communicates via Bluetooth with the phone.

I'm guessing I might have to put up with some sort of cable that comes in via the window or door.

And I may even have to put up with one mounted inside on the dashboard that peers through the windscreen, although that doesn't sound ideal as the roof may block the satellite I imagine.

I've had a good search and can't find what I want. Any ideas? What's the best way to use the N95's GPS in a car?

I guess it is not necessary.

But if you really wanted that badly, I will advice you to appoarch Nokia for solution. Not all other antenna work with any device. The power and resistance must be correct, in order not to damage the device.

Just wondering why my car GPS needs no antenna. I just hook it up to the 12v power supply and it searches for a bunch of satellites in outer space yet no need for an external antenna?? Can anybody explain? THX!

There are two factors at play.

The first is the sort of satellite used, or more accurately the orbit type. GPS uses a satellite orbit which allows the satellites to orbit all over the earth. Satellite TV uses satellites whose orbit is such as they appear in one relatively static location above the equator.

The second is frequency. GPS uses around 1.2 to 1.5 Ghz, which allows penetration through some buildings and windshields. TV satellites use short wavelength microwave which require a precisely aimed dish type antenna. Also, there are a number of different satellites using the same frequencies, so there is no way to discern between the signals from different satellites without an aiming reflector, plus the dish adds "gain" making it easier to get a strong signal with a lower SNR. GPS uses Spread Spectrum to make use of the frequencies.allotted to it, without interference between satellites, SS is not possible with TV satellites because of the different services they carry.

I am going to say satellite radio like XM or Sirius do not need a dish, but an outside antenna. XM uses a geostationary orbit like TV satellites, and Sirius a polar orbit. Both use frequencies around 2 Ghz, and generally require an outside antenna, although it is typically a non-directional patch type antenna.

I have a Dual audio head unit model xdvdn8290 that has gps capabilities, i was in an accident and my gps antenna was smashed, i want to know if any gps antenna that has the correct fitting to attach to the unit will work or if i need the exact one that goes with it?

If it fits check it out to see if it works. Or email the manufacturer to see if any GPS antenna will work with your system.
