car gps navigation systems

Why do GPS navigation units built in to cars cost thousands extra, when you can buy a GPS navigation unit from circuit city or something that only costs a couple hundred? Is there a big difference in something I'm not seeing?

the hand held ones are actually much better with more features and better accuracy
people only buy the built in ones because they are BUILT-IN and most people don;t even bother to research
so in essence ignorance

Question is, do you think it's necessary for motorists in a small country like Singapore to install a GPS navigation system in the car? How often do you think one will use it?

There are so many brands of in-car GPS navigation or tracking systems that have varied functions. Irrespective whether its on Singapore Island or Pulau Bukom, the main thing is to identify your needs. Such systems can be used for fleet management, etc. For personal cars, it can be used to track your vehicle in the event its stolen or "missing" somewhere in some shopping center multi storey car park after a late night binge. Its also a matter of cost. Some systems need telephone signals to be sent over a specified or desired time; some only when you need to locate the vehicle, etc. Check the market after identifying your needs and the cost.

Tom Tom just get a U.K. map/SD card,,,,,
