How Long do People keep their car GPS systems, (Portable Type)?
GPS Ad Featuring Columbus Drive, Chicago

I'm deciding whether to buy a GPS or get one in a new car installed.
How long can you keep the portable GPS, maybe for a long time, about 10-20 years. That's how long, I hope I can keep one if I buy one.

you can keep it as long as you want. you can download software updates from the internet to keep the maps current.

Map app may replace car GPS systems

For the first time, many iPhone users may have downloaded Bing. In a move that#39;s sort of surprising, the Microsoft app is now on Apple#39;s ...

are there any car gps systems that utilize actual sattelite imagery for it's interface?

or is this something that might come in the future?

There is none that I am aware of at this time. You probably wouldn't want one, anyway. The satellite images are good, but they don't normally concentrate on roads over-all. The roads could be hidden by hills or trees. They also don't stand out without being highlighted in some way. All the vegatation and other things that show up in a satellite image is just extra clutter when you are driving and want to see the street or road you are on. The current map system is actually pretty good because everything is clear and free of clutter.

How does car GPS systems work and how accurate are they?

A GPS system relies on satellites orbiting the earth. They require at least three satellite signals to track where you are and where you're going (hence the phrase "Triangulate your position)

GPS systems have come great lengths in the past decade. I have a handheld GPS unit (doesn't have turn by turn directions) and it almost always has less that 100 ft radius of error. (Satellites can't be dead accurate) but on average I'd say it's accurate within 30 feet.

As for automotive GPS units, the biggest complaint that I've heard was the many of them don't give correct directions going onto roads that are closed or arent' even there.

Portable in-car GPS system, what is the best for the money?

I'm planning on purchasing a gps in-car system. I would like a really good one, but I don't want to just throw ;my money away. Which system can I get the most bang for the buck?

TomTom One is a good one , they run about $250 now . Garmin , TomTom and Magellan are the the most well bought brands . I have the TomTom One and its very accurate and reliable. Get the base models in any particular brand , because added features you may never use drive up the price.

what is the best ( for the money) car gps systems. I want voice, the bell that tells when to turn, and?

recommended alternate routes if there is traffic and traffic updates.
thank you..

    What is GPS?

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is the only fully functional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). Utilizing a constellation of at least 24 Medium Earth Orbit satellites that transmit precise microwave signals, the system enables a GPS receiver to determine its location, speed, direction, and time. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite-based navigation system made up of a network of 24 satellites placed into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. GPS was originally intended for military applications, but in the 1980s, the government made the...
