Hi,
I'll be driving out of state this weekend and I am thinking of getting a GPS, could someone please explain to me how does it work? Please go into detail.
I've never thought of getting it until now so I didnt care to read on it or anything.
Thank you so much in advance.
GPS receivers, like TOM TOM, receive signals from satellites and use those to triangulate it's location. It uses that location to find it's location on a map and displays that to you so you know where you are. The manufacturers and/or some independent agency has compiled streets and addresses and that information is also store in the GPS receiver so it can plot a course to a destination you wish to go to.

It will certainly display the coordinates, but don't expect any marine-related maps.
Input: DC 12-24V
Works with most GPS units: Garmin, Tomtom, Magellan, Mio and many others.
This Universal DC Car power adapter comes with 5 separate tips to fit most GPS units.
Output: DC 5V 1.5A

im a college student and i plan to use it to go on vacation and travel by myself. during the summer i usually go to Greensboro NC to stay with my big brother, i travel from the albemarle area of north eastern NC to Greensboro. i want to be able to go visit him independently. i also like having something with a big screen so i can actually see the directions. its going to be put in my 74' maverick when i get one.
Like everybody will recommend, Garmin is the best GPS. I have a Garmin 255W, its wide screen and Text to Speech feature so it will say street names. Its not the best model by Garmin but the basic usefull feature is there. I have Tom and Magellan but in the long run you can save money in Garmin. A Garmin may be $25 more than a competitor brand of more or less same features, but the Upgradeability and support of a Garmin unit is superv than other brands. An outdated Garmin system is better than an outdated Magellan. You might be tempted to a buy other brands, but mine just end up in craigslist until I bought my Garmin. So a 25 bucks savings in other brands is not worth if you sacrifice reliability and customer support. And don't get tempted to buy those with blue tooth, MP3 player, picture viewer, those are fancy features and remember you are buying a GPS not an Ipod. So basically you need a GPS with updated maps(2010), TexT to speech, a unit with new GPS chipset(ask the sales person), freeway lane assist feature, millions of "points of interests" and in addition it may have fuel calculator, live traffic, traffic camera locations, speedtraps etc..
Don't buy in unauthorized dealer, you might get scammed ending up with you unit ineligible for free upgrades.
..and if you are drving a maverick, drive slow and look good! load it with girls LOL! thats what I'll do

I'm looking to buy a GPS navigation system to my car. I heard that Tom tom has maps for many places around the world. Any recommendations?
I have a tom tom 700 and have used it all over Europe. I like it because it has a hard drive and doesn't use a memory card.
There must be someone out there that know's a good unit for use in your car around the $ 300. range.
I would go with a Garmin Nuvi. It is extremely simple to use, has more accurate maps, and better POI database than the Tom Tom. There are different Nuvi models that cover a broad price range. Just pick the one in your price range. CNet.com is a great website to go to read reviews and check prices.

When I got bitten by the GPS bug, I motionless to review GPS systems to see which would be the most appropriate for me. I usually had a deceptive suspicion of what these conspicuous inclination did. I knew they were radically electronic maps, but I had no suspicion how they worked, or what was critical to demeanour for when shopping one. So, I motionless to do a small research. I fast saw which Garmin, Magellan, and Tom Tom dominated the market. Garmin, I had listened of-Magellan and Tom Tom, I had not listened of. My exhilaration at saying who were the most appropriate sellers for GPS units was shortly dejected by an strenuous clarity of difficulty as I clicked on each item, review the description,...
