Question about a car GPS Garmin or Magellen?
SWEET DAYS

I need one of these. I don't need bluetooth or voice to text but still want a good one. I heard the Garmin lock up sometimes. What would you recommend and why. Thanks.

Hi Captain Dave,

I would go with the Garmin in a heartbeat. We use them all the time and never have a problem.

Right now a great buy at Amazon is the Garmin 250W. A great wide screen display. No Bluetooth, voice to text or movie shows - just a good GPS. It comes preloaded with maps of the US & Canada, has a very nice intuitive user interface and is only $235 postpaid. It is a great buy.

If you don't need maps of Alaska or Canada get the 200W for $200

How can I connect my Garmin GPS to my car stereo so it interrupts my music when it says a command?

I want to connect my Garmin Nuvi 360 to my Mazda 6 car stero. I know how to connect it via an FM modulator, but can I make it so it will interrupt what I am listening to in order to state the commands (not over the music)? Any thoughts?

No, but you can play MP3 files through the car stereo from the Garmin Nuvi if you use a cassette adapter.

Download your MP3 audio files to the Garmin and play them while you're driving. The Garmin will interrupt the music when it needs to state a command. Use a cassette adapter (they usually come with CD players) and hook it up through the headphone jack and to your cassette player so you can hear the Garmin through the car's stereo!

Can i hook up my Garmin GPS through my car stereo?
[49/365] Road Trip

I know you can put MP3's on it and would like to hear the songs through the car radio rather than the weak GPS speaker.

It depends on what model of Garmin GPS you have. If yours has a FM transmitter then you can set it so that you will hear the Garmin over your FM car radio. An alternative would be if your unit has Bluetooth. If the Garmin has Bluetooth and your FM car radio has Bluetooth you can set the bluetooth to broadcast through your car radio. If you are unsure if your model has these features, go to http://the-portable-gps.com/garmin-porta ble-gps.html if you have an older model then click on "Discontinued Garmin" . In either case you will see a comparison table showing the features of each model.

Car GPS: Garmin vs. Tomtom?
RECALCULATING......

I have a friend who uses a Tomtom One gps and sometimes it takes a while for it to find signal...but he also doesnt mount it on the dashboard, he holds it in his hand =/

But I know two other people with a Garmin gps, mounted on dashboard and it works great. Plus I've heard Garmin is the best.

So my question is, should I buy a Tomtom GPS for $100? It's on sale, usually $180. Or should I buy a Garmin (and maybe wait til it goes on sale).

Why one vs. the other? I want the most reliable one.

Thanks.

I have owned a Tom Tom One for a few years and just love it. My brother has a Garmin and he likes it as well but hasn't used my Tom Tom. What I like about the TomTom is the ability to change the maps when the roads change from construction or road name changes. You can change it on the unit and then send the change to the Head Office so that others can use the change as well. It's called Map Share. Tom Tom has official map updates every 3 months but you could download other peoples changes every week if you wanted to. (more than 33,000 at last count). When you get updates you also get the new positions of the satelites so that reduces the startup time alot.
I find that mine will get a signal and start up very quickly if I turn it on when the car starts. If I have it turned off and then travel a fair distance and then turn it on (once I'm lost) then it takes longer to find your position. Mine has no trouble if it mounted on the windshield or held in you hand, it has the same signal level. I even have a signal when I bring it in the house close to a window, when I update it.
Since I have owned my TomTom One they have made software improvements like Help Me which shows the location of where you are and how far to the nearest Hospital, Pharmacy, Police, Car Repair shop and so on...
My wife now uses our TomTom One and I have bought the model 720 with a larger screen. I has other features that I don't use like playing MP3, view JPEG pix and FM radio broadcast. I do use the voice spoken street names. I have also downloaded famous voices like Mr T and John Cleese. They are funny. I have also download Points of Interest list like my favorite gas station locations that even shows their symbol on the map when I am close to it.
I would say that $100 is a great price for One, if the wide screen XL One wasn't much more I would pick that one just from personal experience.

8800GT video card or Garmin Nuvi GPS for my car?
Monkeys-in-town illustration

I have 80 bucks in bestbuy coupons and I can't pick between the video card or the gps. They cost about the same. I play a lot of games but I also drive a lot. My current video card is getting pretty old 1800xt.

Let's see... you already have a working video card, but not a GPS. I'd recommend trying out a GPS unit. They can be a lot of fun.
