GPS Answers
I have a garmin etrex legend and i want to take some measurements by driving my car. But the gps looses the signal inside the car. So I was wondering.. Is garmin etrex legend compatible with external antennas? If so could you suggest some models compatible?
I am assuming that you have an earlier one with the gray scale screen and a serial port interface. The new ones receive signals much better.
The basic answer is no. There is no official way to attach an external antenna.
Some people have created "reradiating" antennas for them. It is an external antenna that is attached to a transmitter with an antenna that you set next to your GPS.
This link will give you a search on some of them - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&r ls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs =G5Q&q=etrex+reradiating+antenna& ;btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
For creating tracks, visibility of the GPS is not as important.
Make sure that you have the GPS in position where there is no metal or parts of your body between it and the sky, like as far forward possible on the dash or taped to the windshield. Metal and moisture block the signal.
The big buck option is to buy an etrex with H after it. That indicates the high sensitivity receiver. I rarely get drop outs with my Vista HCx. It will even record tracks inside my house or if I sit on it in my car.
The x versions use MicroSD cards for effectively unlimited storage of tracks. It will record as many points as you can (up to a point a second) as long as the GPS is turned on. It breaks the files every 24 hours of recording.
In this video I give a literal walk-through demonstration of how to use the Garmin eTrex Handheld Outdoor GPS. I show you how to make a waypoint ...
Are there any websites where I can download free MapSource Maps for my Garmin Etrex Legend GPS?
Wow, I had to extend this one..if there are still no good answers I'll assume that there is no way to get free MapSource maps online.
I have a Rhino 130 and its a good unit. I have no idea how to get free anything for it. If you find out, let me know.

Are you talking about transferring waypoints and tracks from your GPS receiver to the computer, and vice versa? Check out EasyGPS. It is a fairly simple program for transferring data back and forth to your eTrex. I'll provide a link below.

I just don't feel like paying $35 for one when I'm sure one can be found cheaper elsewhere.
I got mine on Ebay (years ago but there are similar ones there yet).
You are looking for the cables for the older serial etrex units. The newer ones use USB.
Search on: Etrex serial cable power
and check the box to search the full text.

It will power the GPS while in the car.
there are also some that come with a plug in 12 volt supply so you can power it at home (not really all that useful).
Once you have a position fix and a good lock on the GPS signals, the receiver should be using that info to give you the correct time. You'll just need to make time zone and daylight saving time settings, but due to the recent changes to daylight saving time in the US, you may need to experiment a little.
From the manual:
Changing the Time Zone
To change the time zone:
1. Press the PAGE button to switch to the MENU Page. Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight ‘SETUP,’ then press ENTER. The SETUP Page appears.
2. Press the UP or DOWN button to highlight ‘TIME,’ then press ENTER.
3. Press the UP or DOWN button to select the ‘TIME ZONE’ field, then press ENTER.
4. Press the UP or DOWN button to scroll through the selections. Press ENTER when you have found your correct time zone. Press PAGE to get back to the page of your choice.
You can also change the time format and UTC (Greenwich time) offset by choosing "Time" from the Setup menu. For more info, check out the manual.
