The default maps suck and the Garmin site wants $100 for good maps. Is there a free/cheap source of maps?

Those two models are discontinued. I suggest looking at the Venture HC and Legend HCx. They have a higher-sensitivity receiver and are easier to find in the marketplace.
The main difference between the Venture HC and Legend HCx is that the Legend has a microSD slot that allows you to store more map data and the Legend provides turn-by-turn directions. The Venture has no memory slot (but does have 24MB built-in memory) and does not provide turn-by-turn directions. The Venture has 14 hours battery life versus 25. The Legend can store more waypoints and tracks and allows you to create Custom POIs using Garmin's POI Loader program. The Venture does not allow this.

im using it for geocaching
If you want to put maps on it something like the eTrex Legend HCx would have much more room for maps (on microSD).
But I actually did my first geocaching using an old non-color Garmin GPS 45 from 1995 with no maps (except tracks I made myself wandering around). So the Venture should work fine, especially if you have an automotive GPS to get you in the neighborhood.
I am wanting to purchase a hanheld GPS unit that I can use when going atv/dirtbike riding in the forest. But also to use on the road. I've checked out both and they both do those two things but I want to hear from you people.
I've played with MY magellan Explorist, and then with my friends Etrex with Electronic Compass, and when it comes to EXTREME precision, he won..... Although I haven't played with the Triton, I'd say GO GARMIN ! :) (That's what i'm going to do from now on)

I have a Garmin eTrex Venture CX, I already have TOPO map installed in the SDcard. Need help from an experienced Venture CX user.
Q1) Can I install both the Topo map as well as the Metro guide in the same GPS and have them both running and available for use any time I need them?
Q2) Does the Metro Guide allow you to search an address and waypoint it from the GPS?
1. Yes, you can have both topo and street maps stored on the same card, but you can only view one or the other at a time, not both (hit your menu button once on the map page and select 'map setup' to choose which maps are turned on and off).
2. Yes, Metroguide does allow you to search for an address and mark it as a waypoint. However, it does not route you to that location. Instead, it marks the location and draws a straight line from where you are to that location. Outside of the roads on the basemap (interstates, major US routes, etc.) it will not route you to your destination.
If you would like turn-by-turn directions for the smaller city streets, you'll want City Navigator instead.
