Garmin GPS Advice...Which one to Purchase for Trail Riding?
P3150463

We live in Alaska & do alot of 4x4 trail riding on the weekends. I would like to get my husband a Garmin brand GPS for his birthday, but not sure which one would fit our needs best. Do most GPS's require you to downoad additional maps (like Alaska maps) in order to use them where you are? We had a Magellen when we got up & lost any satelite hook-up once we left the lower 48. Any opinions or advice from users of this brand is greatly appreciated!

Unless you buy one of the automotive models, you will have to purchase the maps separately on CD or DVD. Since you are in Alaska, I really recommend looking at Garmin's website. I am not sure if their usual "North America" map sets include Alaska or how much detail they would have for that region.

Can I Load any of the maps which come for the high end Garmin Nuvi GPS models on my Garmin Nuvi 200W? Thanks!!

Hi All,
I would appreciate you help if anyone of you could tell me how to load new maps on my Garmin Nuvi 200W. What new features can I have apart from what comes as standard? Can someone tell me the exact name of the software I need to upgrade ( download or buy ) from my current 48 States map to North America and Europe maps. I am new to the whole GPS thing.
Thanks in advance for any help and going through my querry.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

You can get the maps you need at mygarmin.com and they will send you a DVD with the maps and when you activate the DVD software it links it to the unit serial number and if you try to load the maps on another Garmin it will tell you your not licensed to load it on that unit and stop. I know because I have a c320 and a c330 and once I loaded my 2008 maps I purchased on one it would not let me load them on the other and when I removed the SD card with the maps from one and put it in the other it would not let me use those maps said it is not licensed for that unit. I hope this helped, Merry Christmas!

Does the Garmin Nuvi 200 GPS include ANY Canada maps whatsoever (i.e. a minimal basemap)?

The Nuvi 200 has maps of the lower 48 states pre-loaded, but not Canada or Alaska. So, what happens if you travel to Canada? Does it show you driving on a completely blank screen, or does it at least have a minimal basemap?

I used to have a Garmin Quest, which requires the user to load all the maps manually. But even before you load any maps, it will still function with a rudimentary basemap that's built-in. Is this similar to what would happen with the Garmin 200 while in Canada?

I'm also curious if you can add Canadian maps to the unit through a separate map purchase after buying the unit itself, if it turns out later that you need the Canada mapping.

Thanks!

The unit that they sell at digitaldealz.net has a great price and covers United States, Hawaii and Puerto Rico, but if you do roam into Canada, you would need to purchase SD data card, City Navigator Canada NT and/or MapSource MetroGuide Canada.

According to Garmin's website: nüvi 200 comes preloaded with City Navigator® NT map data for the continental U.S., Hawaii and Puerto Rico (no Alaska or Canada detail) it appears that it would have some basemaps of Canada, but nothing in detail.

Fortunately, the only problem is having your GPS and the mapping sites speak the same language. Here's what to do:

1. Go to your Main Menu and choose Setup
2. Select 'units'
3. Choose h dd mm ss.s (for hemisphere degrees, minutes, seconds) or h dd.ddddddd (for degrees, decimal degrees)

If your GPS defaults to degrees, minutes, and decimals of minutes (usually what it starts off at), you can enter that into the search field for Google Maps but place a 'space' between the degrees and minutes: N xx xx.xxx W xxx xx.xxx

You should easily be able to change your readout to be one of several.

If your GPS is outputting N xx.xx.xxx then it is giving you DMS. Your first set of x's are your degrees, your middle two are your minutes, and your last 3 are your seconds with 1 decimal place.

You can easily convert those to decimal degrees. To do so, do the following.

1) Keep your degrees as they are, do not alter them.
2) take your minutes and divie by 60
3) take your seconds and divide by 3600

For example

50d 45' 30.5"
= 50d + (45/60) + (30.5/3600)

Therefore your decimal degress will look like

50.758472

If you have a mass numbers of points, you're best bet would be to export them.

Download a software caled DNRGARMIN, its from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, it can pull points directly from your Garmin GPS and convert them for you, its saves you from doing it all yourself.
