My husband purchased this GPS for me and he doesn't really know what he bought, he just figured it would be a good one. Is there a difference between a GPS Receiver and a regular Auto GPS Navigation system and is it a good one?
I have a Nuvi 350. Though discontinued, It's a lovely GPS for what it is.
"Auto GPS Navigation System" typically (though not always) refers to an in-dash unit.
Between the absurd price, the quality of the maps, the price and availability of map upgrades, and the inabilty to take it with me when I travel in a rental car, I recommend the handheld or dashtop products like a Nuvi over an in-dash.

I'm narrowing down my search of which GPS I want to get. Now I'm stuck between two, one which has the high-sensitivity receiver feature, but not text-to-speech, and the other, vice versa. Which is more important? Does the high-sensitivity feature really make that much of a difference? Thanks in advance!
Go with the better receiver. With the older receiver you needed to have line of sight to communicate with GPS satellites, so if you are in a city behind tall buildings or even inside a parking garage, you could have no or a weak signal. Also, the high peformance receiver is pretty much standard with new GPS units, so if you see a GPS without one, it's probably an older model that has other shortcomings, like older software and maps, and fewer features.
Text-to-speech is a very useful feature but I would rank it below the receiver. The nuvi 260 is the lowest Garmin model with new receiver and TTS, and it's now $263 on amazon. Unless this is for a Christmas gift, I'd wait a bit for prices to drop further, and get both features.
what will i need to get it to be able to work well?
and i'm going to traveling to orlando florida and i need an unexpensive gps system that will show me the highway stops and where to make turns is this system for that thanks?
This will probably be adequate, though it is quite old technology. Current Garmin models can route (give turn-by-turn directions) using the basemap, so if the GPS III happens to be able to route using the basemap, it will get you close to your destination. It'll take you to the closest major road or highway, but unless you have detailed maps loaded, like for neighborhood streets, you might not get to your exact destination. You might want to check if they have the map CDs available, as well as the cable that would be needed to transfer the detailed map data to the GPS receiver.
The problem with most new GPS receivers is that the detailed maps cost extra, like $70-130 extra. If you have a laptop, look into finding a copy of Microsoft Streets and Trips that comes with the GPS receiver. Even a version a year or two old might be OK. I've seen the 2006 version with the GPS receiver as cheap as $45. The GPS receiver is attached to your laptop, and the laptop will give you on-screen driving directions. I think some versions of Streets and Trips will even give you audio cues for turns.

Does anyone know if the Garmin 350 works as a gps receiver with delorme street atlas plus 2007?
GPS receivers will work only with maps made by their manufacturer. TomToms only use TomTom maps, DeLormes only use DeLorme maps, and so on. You will have to use Garmin's City Navigator NT product.
Edit: I re-read your question. Do you want to use the 350 as a GPS receiver feeding coordinates to the DeLorme software on the laptop? I don't think the nuvi line is capable of sending NMEA data, which is the data that would be used by the mapping software on the laptop.
I am thinking about buying one, are they any good??
I'm particuarly concerened about the map resolution, in the UK it comes loaded with the Atlantic base map, is this good enough for navigating around European roads, not just motorways but smaller lanes and streets?
If its no good, what are your recommendations for alternatives, I mainly need something to find my way around when driving through europe. But also like the fact that the Garmin eTrex can be used for hill walking, sailing etc. Units like the Tom Tom one are fine for driving, but no good for the other applications.
A friend of a friend had one and said it was a bit rubbish. They got a Tom Tom instead though. Sorry, I don't know any other alternatives.
