I am thinking about getting one. I know Garmin is highly rated but so is Tom Tom. A lot of people prefer Tom Tom and it is about $20 less expensive than the Garmin. Just wondering the main difference. Let's say between the Tom Tom One and the Garmin 200?
I have used them both, and they're both fine units. I prefer the Garmin nuvi 200 though because I found it easier to use and the touchscreen was more sensitive. On the TomTom, I had to press down a lot harder for the touch to be recognized.
I recommend you go to a store that carries both of the units and play around with them to see what looks and feels best for you.

i would like to know who prefers a tom tom and who prefers garmin. im trying to buy one and it would be helpful if someone has both and prefers one over the other, or people who have either garmin or tom tom and tell me the pros and cons of your gps system. thank you so much!
I have both. I got the TomTom as a backup because I needed to send the Garmin in for service (headphone jack) a few months after I got it and was already hooked on it.
The Garmin computer is more reliable. It can be counted on the boot up every time I need it. The TomTom has failed more than once and required it to be hooked up to my computer to "refresh" or whatever it does when I connect to it to the computer.
The maps are similar in appearance. The Garmin voice prompt is more descriptive than the TomTom. The TomTom maps and satellite positions are updated every time I hook-up to my computer (probably contributes to less reliable performance). There is also an annual master map update for purchase. There are no interim map updates for Garmin -- only the annual purchased map update.
The TomTom display is much MUCH easier to read at a glance while driving.
I find the voice prompts on both to be very irritating after a very short while, so I much prefer the easier-to-read TomTom display. But I don't completely trust the TomTom to boot properly every day, so I keep the Garmin as a spare while on the road.

Looking to get a Garmin GPS and I dont feel like spending $500 or more on a GPS. The ones im looking at are the 200W and 260W. Anyone have or know anything about these two models?

I am considering purchasing a system (or one comparable that is less expensive) as I may be moving to the Houston area and I am unfamiliar with it. Do you buy the system and that's it? Or do you have to pay for monthly service and updates?
You buy the system. There is no service fee. The satellites that provide the information are govt. satellites and are free to use. Map updates are an issue with many GPS systems. Many brands have map updating service, but it's difficult to keep up with road and street changes over the entire country. I'm not sure how Garmin handles it. Ask before you buy.
