I would like some cool voices like the ones available for the TOM TOM units. and maybe some way to update maps w/o buying the expensive updates, because sometimes roads that ARE there aren't there on my Garmin. Even "new" roads that have been in service for at least 10 yrs. And i'm talkin major high ways that just arent there on my gps unit & it has me drivin in the great abyss when i use those "new" roads.
Some of the Garmins have selectable voices that can be updated/replaced via Garmin's Webupdater program. Unlike TT, I've never seen third party voice kits for these.
City Navigator 2009 (!!?!) has been released just w/in the last week or two for Europe and US.
I've seen some roads that are on the maps before they're even open and you're right - sometimes "old" roads just aren't there. The best way to get roads updated is to bug Garmin via the site linked below.
This is a video review for the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx handheld GPS unit and how to use it for geocaching. The review covers key features of this ...
I tried to update my gps unit on garmin.com but it says there are no updates for it at this time. It does not even pick up a gas station that has been here for 2 years!
2 years isn't that old in terms of GPS and mapping programs.
Most of Garmin's maps were released in 2005-2006. They are due for some updates, however that would likely only include 2006 data.
There isn't some giant universal map database that everyone uses. There are several map sources, and each must be compiled for different manufacturers' units. Then the compiled maps have to be manufactured onto the GPS units themselves, or upgrade DVDs/CDs/flash cards.
All the GPS units warn you that data is not up-to-the minute accuracy, and is only a guide for finding locations.

I currently purchased three Garmin c330's but didn't realize thay they came with outdated maps. I was wondering if I purchased the map update once if I could update all three GPS's. Thanks for your help.
No. They track by serial number, so you can download a map package on only one GPS unit.
But go to this site and see if you are eligible for a free update: http://www8.garmin.com/unlock/update.jsp . I don't know why the GPS units you got have outdated maps, unless they have been sitting on the store shelf for a long time.

I saw quite a few on Craigslist, that are much cheaper than buying new. Is there anything I should be wary of when buying used?
Nothing out of the ordinary.
Older models might not have the same features or satellite aquisition speed of current models. Batteries will be closer to the end of their useful life. Maps most likely won't be up to date. Accessories may be missing. You won't have a warranty.

I have a Garmin C330 GPS unit that I want to update to the 2009 mapset, but, I want to back up the 2008 set in case of any problems.
I would think that you should just be able to find it under my computer but I can't, anyone know how to do this?
You actually can't back them up. Garmin is pretty paranoid about people hacking the maps and selling them/using them on extra units. If you are using a Map Update DVD then the 2008 maps will automatically be backed up.
I just bought the Map update for my Nuvi 660 from EdgeGPS.com for $59.00 They were great.
