garmin portable car gps

Recently, someone smashed my window late at night and took my Garmin GPS. My car was parked outside my driveway and it is on my dashboard. I felt that the neighborhood I lived in was fairly safe. Do you take it out of your car or hide it when you park your car after going somewhere?

I usually leave it on the dash - but like you used to, I have an illusion of safety where I live. In all seriousness, the window will cost me more to replace than my Garmin iQue 3600.

Garmin is addressing this though - their newest in-car (portable) systems come with some type of security. Thus stealing them will be of little value as they won't work any more. From their web site:

Garmin Lock™ – anti-theft feature that disables the unit from performing any functions until you type in a specific 4-digit PIN or take the unit to a predetermined location.

Unfortunately the bad guys don't know this and will probably continue to steal things.

Tomtom Go 720- great graphics, lots of points of interests, text to speech ( calls out street name). Also blue tooth compatible (you can get real time traffic updates).

Not to mention, very sleek, compact, and stylish.

Highly recommend it. It will will help you find streets and routes you never knew existed. It will shave time out your commute, makes routes more efficient, hence saving the gas money.

an updated dvd for my husband in dash GPS cost $190,should I get that or buy a brand new portable GPS for him as a Christmas gift? Which 1 would make more sense to get? I think a good portable GPS i.e. Garmin or Magellan cost much more than $190.

It depends on how good the integrated car GPS is, and what it comes with.

You can get a decent Garmin nuvi 260 for around $200 on sale, but it doesn't have Bluetooth. To get Bluetooth you'd have to go up to at least a nuvi 360 which goes for $300 or higher. I'd look at these rough price points and compare the features then decide. (I use Garmin here, but you can go with other brands if you prefer, and prices are roughly similar)

The integrated car GPS may look better in a nice car, without the clutter of a GPS with its windshield mount and charger plug. On the flip side, you can take a portable GPS with you, from one car to another if you are not using your car, or if you plan to sell it some day soon. With the integrated GPS, it stays attached to the car.

Like a portable Garmin...or Tom Tom...Are they any good?? And do they have to be plugged in all the time?

Yes i have a Magellan 4040 and its awesome, I never go out without carrying it with me. They do not have to be plugged in all the time only when you are in the car. Then you plug it into the cigarette lighter so that you can use it but otherwise recharging it is a cinch, just plug it into your electrical socket at home and the device will shut off once its fully charged. You can also use this device with your bluetooth and call a tow truck with it. Its awesome and I regret not buying it earlier, I could have went to lots of places that I otherwise would not have for fear of getting lost. Hope this helps
