I bought A garmin GPS V and it has a europian base map installed, can I change this to a US version some how?
Unfortunately, no. You can however buy various types of software from Garmin for street maps of America, such as City Navigator North America, that will give you detailed street maps of the entire country. The basemap is not changeable though.

On the Garmin website, you can download the entire manual. Including any updates, special requirements for your unit and car. Easy to get around in, no cost manual will take a lot of paper if you print it all, but download to file and print part you need.

I have a friend who uses a Tomtom One gps and sometimes it takes a while for it to find signal...but he also doesnt mount it on the dashboard, he holds it in his hand =/
But I know two other people with a Garmin gps, mounted on dashboard and it works great. Plus I've heard Garmin is the best.
So my question is, should I buy a Tomtom GPS for $100? It's on sale, usually $180. Or should I buy a Garmin (and maybe wait til it goes on sale).
Why one vs. the other? I want the most reliable one.
Thanks.
I have owned a Tom Tom One for a few years and just love it. My brother has a Garmin and he likes it as well but hasn't used my Tom Tom. What I like about the TomTom is the ability to change the maps when the roads change from construction or road name changes. You can change it on the unit and then send the change to the Head Office so that others can use the change as well. It's called Map Share. Tom Tom has official map updates every 3 months but you could download other peoples changes every week if you wanted to. (more than 33,000 at last count). When you get updates you also get the new positions of the satelites so that reduces the startup time alot.
I find that mine will get a signal and start up very quickly if I turn it on when the car starts. If I have it turned off and then travel a fair distance and then turn it on (once I'm lost) then it takes longer to find your position. Mine has no trouble if it mounted on the windshield or held in you hand, it has the same signal level. I even have a signal when I bring it in the house close to a window, when I update it.
Since I have owned my TomTom One they have made software improvements like Help Me which shows the location of where you are and how far to the nearest Hospital, Pharmacy, Police, Car Repair shop and so on...
My wife now uses our TomTom One and I have bought the model 720 with a larger screen. I has other features that I don't use like playing MP3, view JPEG pix and FM radio broadcast. I do use the voice spoken street names. I have also downloaded famous voices like Mr T and John Cleese. They are funny. I have also download Points of Interest list like my favorite gas station locations that even shows their symbol on the map when I am close to it.
I would say that $100 is a great price for One, if the wide screen XL One wasn't much more I would pick that one just from personal experience.
Can anyone tlel me in basic terms what the main diffs btwn the TomTom one 3rd edition and the Garmin NuV1250 is? It is for a gift and they aksed for the TomTom, but it is sold out everywhere. Found one left but it was returned by someone & package is open. Is that safe? possibly damaged? Do i buy that one or get the Garmin ($100 more expensive). Are they similiar? Is one better than the other?
Thanks! i know nothing about GPS units.
thanks Lissie, more info: hes never had one b4, but thought the tomtom woudl be good, also reasonably priced. does the Garmin do more than the TomTom? Is the Garmin modle worth an extra $100?
I use the Tom Tom One 3rd edition and like it. Before I bought mine, I did searches and saw very few bad comments about it -- mostly that there should be more information in the quick start guide (the full manual is on the website). You can connect this GPS to your computer and download updates from TomTom. A few months ago (October) a consumer magazine rated it a best buy after testing over a dozen units (there were several units that were rated higher -- but their price was a lot more). Go to the TomTom website for a lot more information.
It's small enought to fit in your pocket and will run for several hours (longer if you turn the brightness and volume down / off) on the internal battery. The speaker is clear and loud -- there is also a setting to have the volume increase as your speed increases. Businesses are included in the points of interests (gas stations, car dealers, hospitals, parks, police and fire stations, etc.); you can select to show one, or as many as you like. You can set it to warn you (with a choice of sounds) when you get near one or more of these points of interests. It can tell you how fast you're driving, and can warn you if you speed. When you plan a route, you can have it avoid toll roads, or whatever. There is a "where am I" button that finds you on the map with just that one touch. You can enter a PIN number so a theif won't be able to use it.
This unit doesn't speak the names of the streets (the more expensive ones do). This unit will say "turn left 1/4 mile" and not "turn left 1/4 mile at Main Street." Also, as with any GPS brand, there will be some minor mistakes on the maps, but on this unit you can correct errors and then you have a choice to share your corrections with other users when you connect to the TomTom website (USB cable included).
Walmart, Best Buy, Radio Shack, and many other stores sell TomTom -- many have them sale priced in ads so you should be able to find a new one.
