Are the 14, or 16's able to stay locked on to GPS signals better without loss of the signal?
it is the number of satellites it can hear at the same time. parallel receivers are faster then the old serial receivers. the more satellites you see at the time, the higher accuracy.
it still only takes 3 to get lon/lat and hasl. but when you go into a quiet zone, under a large tree, overpass, having more sources does not cause the GPS receiver to lose lock.
1999. my bad I use this for geocaching. Really accurate, but batteries suck. 12 hours at best. Questions? just ask. Created on October 28, 2009 ...
I might download map software and is wondering how much memory the GPS has.
I have the basic etrex
You'll have to be more specific.
The Garmin website lists 12 different eTrex models (eTrex, eTrex Camo, eTrex Euro, eTrex Legend, eTrex Legend C, eTrex Legend Cx, eTrex Summit, eTrex Venture, eTrex Venture Cx, eTrex Vista, eTrex Vista C, eTrex Vista Cx).
The different models range from no built-in memory, up to 24 MB built-in memory, to using a replaceable microSD card (which currently go up to 2 GB).
Update:
Sorry, the basic eTrex is not a mapping GPS unit. It has no built-in mapping memory, does not have a base map, and does not support mapping software.

know a bit about electronics, but hardly anything about cars. Im lookin for a way to do this as cheaply as possible, without it looking like i have done it myself.
Look under the Hood. Sometimes there are Posts where the battery wires go, it like a Distribution Point. Run a Black to Ground and a Red to Positive. You can possibly come Direct off the Battery, just make it Neat and Professional looking. IF, the GPS not have an in-line fuse, you should add one in an easy to reach place and it look good too. Use the same size wires that the GPS have and it will look good.
can you send a distress call out on a garmin etrex 12 channel gps? I was wondering just when we go hiking in colorado
I don't believe so; I own a Garmin GPS 12, and I believe my unit and yours are both GPS "receivers" and not transmitters.
I think you may be looking for a separate item:
a mountain locator unit --

Would you justify going with a 16 parallel GPS if the 12 parallel one seems better in other ways, like software, electronic compass, etc?
Nope. There's a little error in GPS signals so the more signals you have the more accurate you can get by averaging out the errors. But there's going to be very little difference once you get past 12 signals.
You might be accurate to within 6 feet instead of 7 feet.
