How do I improve the accuracy of my GPS?

I am using a Magellan eXplorist 400 series GPS. I have already upgraded the firmware for the unit. I have downloaded and installed all the updates available from the magellan website. I emailed customer support and they said wait until the next update comes out. Surely there has to be another way to improve the accuracy on my GPS, short of buying a better unit?


The inaccuracy may be in the satellite signals. The US government controls the GPS satellites and has them configured to send out random inaccuracies. This is done to try and prevent terrorists from using GPS.

Of course there have always been workarounds. Magellan had a solution years ago where you would station 3 fixed point GPS units and connect them through a differential base. Since their location was fixed any fluctuation that was detected could then be corrected against the mobile unit that you were carrying in the area. In this way it could get accuracy right down to the foot. This was very useful for maping archeaological digs and the like.

Improving the accuracy of the GPS System?

Any1 who might have an idea to improve the current GPS system?

I'm NOT asking how to improve the accuracy of MY GPS system. Just GPS in general.


The existing GPS systems are already REALLY accurate. There are some inaccuracies added to the system for non government/non-military users that are introduced for "safety" reasons.

What GPS is best for signal strength and accuracy?

I have an older Garmin streetpilot that I bought a couple years ago and it's ok but loses signal quite frequently. It's absolutely terrible in the city which is where I need it most. I guess with skyscrapers and buildings all around it's hard to stay connected. What is a good GPS for this type of environment? (lower prices are preferred)


look for the GPS engine type. The engine is the actual receiver and not all the junk added.

If you are taking way-points I suggest holding the GPS still for about 1 minute before adding the way-point so that the GPS is able to calculate better where it is at in still situation.

You can also usually tell your GPS to only accept readings at certain VDOP and HDOP levels - the lower the level the better the reading. Those stand for Vertical and Horizontal Dilution of Precision.

Many devices also accept external antennas and this sometimes helps as well.
