I have a garmin etrex legend and i want to take some measurements by driving my car. But the gps looses the signal inside the car. So I was wondering.. Is garmin etrex legend compatible with external antennas? If so could you suggest some models compatible?
I am assuming that you have an earlier one with the gray scale screen and a serial port interface. The new ones receive signals much better.
The basic answer is no. There is no official way to attach an external antenna.
Some people have created "reradiating" antennas for them. It is an external antenna that is attached to a transmitter with an antenna that you set next to your GPS.
This link will give you a search on some of them - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&r ls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs =G5Q&q=etrex+reradiating+antenna& ;btnG=Search&aq=f&oq=&aqi=
For creating tracks, visibility of the GPS is not as important.
Make sure that you have the GPS in position where there is no metal or parts of your body between it and the sky, like as far forward possible on the dash or taped to the windshield. Metal and moisture block the signal.
The big buck option is to buy an etrex with H after it. That indicates the high sensitivity receiver. I rarely get drop outs with my Vista HCx. It will even record tracks inside my house or if I sit on it in my car.
The x versions use MicroSD cards for effectively unlimited storage of tracks. It will record as many points as you can (up to a point a second) as long as the GPS is turned on. It breaks the files every 24 hours of recording.

I just purchased an external Gilsson GPS antenna for my Magellan GPS.My GPS does have an original Magellan external antenna on it.Will the new Gilsson antenna work any better than the Magellan one i have now or have i just thrown some money out the window?
Please explain if you can.Thanks.
Without model numbers of involved equipment, it'll be hard to say.
I've seen reviews of units like the Gillson's MCX series and they show rather slight, but measurable differences from model to model. So unless your original antenna was pretty bad, I wouldn't expect noticable difference.
It's easy to do A/B testing, though. Go to the satellite screen and compare the number and size of bars displayed while changing antennas.

My car has a v-kool athermic heat blocker (v-70) installed on the front windshield. When I installed my Mio P350 GPS device I found that it's not able to lock on to any satellites.
Will an external GPS antenna kept INSIDE the car help in locking on to satellites. Or will it have to be placed outside the car?
I have an antenna for my own mio, and although it did work inside the car, the connection was easily interrupted (nothing that i can specifically pin it down to) but once i placed it outside it worked perfectly. It's magnetic and waterproof.
This is similar to the one I got but it's cheaper!

I need to mount my GPS antenna on Carbon Fiber structure. Do I still need to install additional sheet of metal to serve as ground plane for my antenna or not anymore since my mounting surface is already conductive material which is a carbon fiber?
I fly kites with carbon fiber spars, which are great conductors

Proactive Investors UK - Sarantel: about to ride the GPS wave?
Investors are often keen to profit from new trends in consumer electronics. The safest approach, of course, is to bank on some of the big names in the world of gadgets to keep on making products that people will want to buy; for example, Apple may have been regarded as being on the decline back in the late 90s, but then the company produced the iPod.
Antenna specialist Sarantel could turn out to be just such a company. Spun out of Nasdaq-listed Symmetricom nine years ago, this technology business has focused on designing and manufacturing ‘filtering antennas’ for use in portable wireless devices but with a particular focus on GPS (Global Positioning System) technology. Worldwide annual shipments of GPS-integrated mobile devices are expected to grow at a rate approaching 40% until 2012, by which time they will have reached 834 million units, according to Parks Associates. Although personal navigation devices (PNDs) will remain the most widely-used and preferred navigational choice until 2011, by 2012 mobile phones and smart phones will constitute the majority of shipments, said the research firm in a report published last year. Parks’ view of the GPS-integrated market is backed up by more recent research, released in April this year, from fellow US-based analyst In-Stat. It expects a spurt in GPS growth to come not only from mobile phones that integrate the technology, but also from mobile consumer electronic devices (e.g. portable music and video players) and mobile computing platforms. Sarantel’s key technology is an antenna, formed around a core ceramic material, that it claims has a far better performance than conventional antennas. The company says that conventional antennas are generally adversely affected by being held close to the human body, but Sarantel has developed a filtering antenna – combining form, materials and structure to very tightly constrain the antenna’s near field. Because conventional antennas suffer low in-use efficiency and de-tuning in the presence of the human body, as well as being highly susceptible to interference from nearby components, each new antenna requires extensive development to get it to work within a particular kind of electronic device. And as devices get smaller, their antenna problems intensify, especially when you are trying to incorporate several wireless functions like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and, of course, GPS. This ability to sell a standardised GPS antenna has been key to the company building a diverse market for itself of more than 150 customers, serving specialised applications. In recent months, Sarantel has secured design wins with: Harris Corporation, which has selected Sarantel’s LBS Pro miniature GPS antenna for its new Unity XG-100 portable multiband public safety radio; Sonim Technologies, which is incorporating the LBS Pro GPS antenna in its XP3 Quest rugged mobile phone; and G-CORE, which is using the company’s SL1300 GPS antenna in its recently-launched Mini Caddy Golf GPS device. But more important is the company’s recognition that despite a recent tough market for its products, as a result of the worldwide economic downturn, it has the chance to take advantage of its reputation as GPS goes from being a niche to a ‘must-have’ technology in all kinds of mobile electronic devices.
