All of the GPS tracking devices I have found are very expensive. Are there any lower cost GPS tracking devices that I could attach to my $500 assets and poll periodically to see where they are at?
The cheapest one that I know is a a AUD 280 Trimble TrimTrac 1.1 from www.phantomeye.com
The device is SMS enabled for polling.
Anything that has a GSM / GPS chipset will not be cheap. The other considerations are battery life. This one has a motion sensor enabled switching on/off and can go upto 4-9 months.

would anyone out there be interested in a gps tracking device?
I work for a company that sells these devices to companies to track delivery trucks, fleets, employees, etc. MUNICIPALITIES should have them in their vehicles.
I would have loved one when my kids were still teenagers.
In the first crucial hours of an Amber alert, this could be an invaluable asset to the search. Hide it in a hair-clip, a piece of jewelry (like a pierced earring), or in something that could be worn out of sight under the clothing.
It may be expensive, but how much is your child worth to you? Also, I think the price could be subsidized by organizations that search for missing children. Better to lay out a few bucks than to grieve for the rest of your life.
People put these things on their cars--why not their kids???
I would have said "implant," but I was afraid people would take exception. Yes, implanting such a device would be great if it were done safely. I don't see it as a total deterrent, but as an aid to the police minutes after a child goes missing. Its very existence might curtail kidnappings.
I think its a great idea even tho i think the kidnappers would catch on and strip the child of any clothing or jewelry they have on them in order not to get caught but i also think it would give the police and or parents enough time to try and find the child... I watched that new episode of heroes this week and Hero injected himself and Ando with a GPS tracker i think those might work even better i'd buy one of those for sure.
