Moving to Australia in 2009 and want to buy a GPS that will work for me here in the meantime and can download overseas maps easily - specifically Australia and New Zealand - Which is the best automotive GPS for this?
Get a Navman, I have this. You can buy different chips if you want to go overseas. To get the different chips its best to order it from the Navman website.

Do any of the brands offer free map updates? TomTom claims they do but I've heard otherwise from TomTom owners.
Most do not. The maps are copyrighted content and the creators of it need paid.
Some might offer subscription to maps.

I just moved into a new residential development and my Magellan RoadMate 800 does not have the latest map. I have search the internet and found that i cannot update maps. I want to buy a new GPS that would allow me to update maps.

I have a Garmin iQue 3600 and a Quest that you can load either map set into. You have to buy it wit the US maps, then order the Euro maps from Garmin and load them up as needed.
I believe that you can do the same thing with an of their other models.
The safest place is from the GPS manufacturers website, though I had awesome luck with something I think might have been a little shady.
I was going to France and wanted to bring my own GPS instead of renting one. My manufacturer's US website only had US maps, but their European site listed a Western Europe map for over $100!.
So I took my chances, went on eBay and found someone selling one for $30 (including shipping). I ended up with the original DVD (in my casse, I load maps onto a storage card on the device) and it worked like a charm.
