I am searching for a portable GPS for a car for a present and want to make sure I get a good product. Does anybody have an experience of owning a good or bad GPS and can help me out with my decision. Thanks!
I found a site that has comparisons of most of the popular GPS systems for cars. They also have a list of the most purchased units. The thing I liked best was they post comments of actual owners of that particular GPS so it allows you to see what others think. They also have info on tracking GPS systems and even explain how they work and they're not trying to sell you anything, no advertisements. Good luck.
Note: Don't buy a Navigon unit as I understand that they are quitting the US market. Good Luck
www.nuvigarmin660.com There are lot of GPS systems for cars available in the market today of every type, make and brand. How do you decide what ...
This came up with a coworker as we were looking for GPS maps in other countries.
Which auto manufacturer / country was the first to put GPS units in cars? Japan? US? Germany? Anyone know? Obviously we're talking as standard equipment options, not just customized James Bond type alterations.
First used in military vehicles but as far as OEM install GPS units, I would guess Japan would be the first since in NA, Zexel was the first to put the PathMaster in the Avis rental car and Rockwell later took over the deal and Magellan purchased the driver information system from RockWell aka Rocekwell PathMaster later on to be Magellan PathMaster. They were first sold in NA in the Olds 88 and Olds 98 as a factory dealer add on in 1996.
I know Blaupunkt and Alpine also have some first generation back in mid 90's.
But I am pretty sure the first country that offered an OEM GPS solution was Japan because of how small the regions was and they were into high tech gadget.
Right now they have very neat features that is not currently available in North America like finding POI's inside a high rise building.

I am looking at cars, and it seems like if you want a GPS navigation system it costs thousands more, but if you go to circuit city or somewhere where they sell those hand-help GPS navigation units like from Garmin etc. they cost only a couple hundred. Is there a difference between these two that I can't see which explains why the car navigation systems cost so much more?
The difference is alot more money..!! Get a decent portable, and you can take it with you when you go in another car...They work the same portable and installed...The big difference is if your installed gp system goes on the blink and they have to take it out and fix it...Your going to pay big time for taking it out fixing it and re-installing it....Go portable...less money all around and just as good !!

I need supportive details that lets people know that these technologies are linking us to our cultural heritage. PLEASE ASAP
I think this is a highly academic question and does require lots of supportive data to substantiate the reply.
However, following is just an overall opinion-
As obvious, all of these are communication devices and supposed to improve the inter-personal interactions. Whereas the Internet and cellphones may help one to improve the contact in micro, as well as, macro level. For example, the internet not only has improved the speed of communication in the sense of e-commerce (these days we don't go to shop or airlines office/s to buy stuff), personal and official communications (we use emails more often than mails for family, personal and official reason) but also the options to get the news, information, data, etc. on time. In the similar pattern, the cellphones have also improved the connectivity (whether you are walking in a busy market street or you are in the shopping mall or even when you are right on your desk or bed). SMS and MMS are also added advantage of cellphones for personal, official or in the domain of telemarketing .
However, the big BUT is, we have stopped visiting the relatives, parents, off-springs and shops (where you can feel, touch, smell, taste the stuff you want to buy). I wonder if this particular way of life continues, whether the entire mankind will forget the 'gesture' as a means of communication.
The only hope of light is GPS (whether used in car or a hand held one), because you will use this to reach a destination, whether it is friend, foe, relative or shop.
I have yet to own a car that has an accurate speedo reading. As you reach higher speeds most cars are upto 10mph faster on the speedo than you are actually doing. Yes, a backup 'normal' speedo would prob be needed as the odd time you may lose your signal but GPS speedos that are 100% true are the future? Lots of cars have sat navs built in so the technology is already in the car. Any ideas??
Surely mfctrs dont make their speedos show an artificially slow reading to keep the speed down?
Hi
The system you ask about is on it's way and guess what, every time anyone goes over the speed limit by even one m.p.h, they'll get a fine through the post, just wait and see.

The Plain Truth: Congressman wants government GPS in cars
Costing $150 million-plus, was introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.
"Oregon has successfully tested a Vehicle Miles Traveled fee, and it is time to expand and test the VMT program across the country," he said in a statement on his website. "A VMT system can better assess fees based on use of our roads and bridges, as well as during times of peak congestion, than a fee based on
"It is time to get creative and find smart ways to rebuild and renew America's deteriorating infrastructure," he said.
His plan calls for the Department of the Treasury to study the plan with projects in every state.
Blumenauer said the Oregon test "charged drivers for the number of miles they traveled rather the fuel they consumed. The test was convenient for drivers, protected personal privacy, and proved to be easily administrable."
