I heard from someone that there is a GPS handheld that allows me to create my own maps an add them to my gps. Is this true? If it is true, what company produces it and how can i add them?
There are programs and online resources available for creating maps for the Garmin handhelds.
There is a lot of information and help in the Yahoo Map Authors group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/map_author s/
Creating maps isn't easy but you can do almost anything.
This is a video review for the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx handheld GPS unit and how to use it for geocaching. The review covers key features of this ...
I trail ride in heavily wooded areas. I would like to start doing some riding off the beaten path. I am interested to know what handheld GPS units some of you use. Which GPS gets the best reception under heavy tree cover? What about value for the money?
Go with the Garmin HCx. You'll be wondering where you DON'T get a signal. Garmin are the best navigational systems in my opinion, and this handheld one is great for going over the mountain and through the woods, to grandmother's house you'll go!
:P

I want to be able to get GPS coordinates from various places in Panama and then place them on a Google map. Do I need a special handheld, software, etc.? Thanks!
You have to get one that has map capabilities, and that it has a map for Panama. I really don't know if there's one, as I know we don't have a GPS map for the city streets to be used for car navigation.
As for recharging don't worry, as we use the same voltage as in the US 110/120V

I'm going on a long flight pretty soon and I have a handheld Garmin GPS. I'd like to use it to see where I am, how fast we're going, stuff like that. Is it safe to turn a GPS on when flying? What about during takeoff and landing?
No it is against FAA laws to use any electronic equipment below 10,000ft above 10,000 certain electronic are permitted. GPS is never permitted at any altitude, it may interfere with the air crafts navigational instruments.
Looking for a good handheld GPS.Don't know if I should go with the Lowrance Ifish or Ihunt or Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX.Any info appreciated.
Lowrance more bells and whistles for your money-$300.00
The lowrance I fish h2o . I`ve owned one for 3 years and never had a problem.Garmin is for the once a month man the Lowrance is for the weekend warrior.
Garmin vs lowrance I have a buddy that has a Garmin E Trax the Garmin is simple but the lowrance is faster and more accurate. by almost it seems 2-3 yards. this is a big difference if you are ice fishing before daybreak and want to find your honey hole from the day before in a blinding snow storm. Or when its 1 hr. before daybreak and you want to sneak to your tree stand with out a light un detected Can mount it on your boat ,your car, your snowmobile , and 4 wheeler.Ram mounts makes the mounts and brackets. They come preloaded with a standard map also I bought a chip and added hot maps platinum to it and most lakes i fish I get 1 ft. contours.cam, also you can load topo on them. You can get more detailed maps for lowrance.
lowrance is a very good company ,been around for a longer time than most. Their service is good. Find all this at http://www.cabela`s.com or http://www.basspro.com.
Great Question
Hope this helps ya.
