My husband has a Magellan handheld GPS. He is having trouble getting suitable map software for motorbike riding in the Victorian State Forrest. He needs to have bush tracks, creeks, rivers and location of mountains etc. Any ideas of where to look would be great.
We don't mind buying it.

I take it you don't want to buy the software? The 'Discover Aus Streets and Tracks" is very good, but unfortunately only a few cents short of $400.

Does anyone have any links to technical white papaers ont he subject, and the theory behind it

Look up 'random walk', 'route optimisation algorithms', 'trial and error algorithms', etc. etc.

Essentially, between any 2 points there are only a limited number of possible routes .. especially if the algorithum selects Motorways over A roards, A over B and B over unclassified ...

This can be done by assigning different 'costs' to each type of road .. the s/w could start by costing the 'most direct' route and them make random changes in an attempt to reduce the 'cost' ..

I am looking for a mobile mapping system / GPS system for my mobile office (motorcoach). I have been thinking of possibly a GPS receiver to plug into my notebook and mapping software installed, but it seem it may be too clumsy to use while driving. Any recommendation on software and receiver?

If not that, who makes the better dash system mobile mapper with GPS? It needs to be accurate and have maps up to date, or at least upgradeable.

For my cars I use Caliber GPS P3600 for less than $300. It is pretty good and you can get map updates from their website. For my laptop I use DeLorme Street Atlas USA with GP20 USB plug ($135). They both work OK and even if you don't use your laptop as a GPS, it is a great map program to have on your computer.

I'm looking for driving direction software for my GPS-enabled cellphone (KRZR K1). While I found some, they all needed an internet connection from the phone to do direction searching. Is there software that do this completely offline?

To be clear, I'm looking for GPS mapping software that:

- Runs on a java-enabled phone
- Provides driving directions.
- Can search for driving directions and reroute if you go off course.
- Does NOT require an internet connection from the phone, EVER. EVEN when searching for driving directions / rerouting.
- Mapping data can be updated by a PC.

I know this sort of application is possible - even older versions of Microsoft Streets & Trips for Windows CE and Windows Mobile could do this. I'm just trying to find something that'll run on my phone, instead of a PDA.

I'm willing to purchase a 2gb MicroSD card to store offline maps and routing data. And while free software would be nice, I'm willing to consider paying for software.

Any recommendations?
