Information on automotive GPS / mobile mapping systems and notebook GPS software?
Lightroom4 beta GPS

Use will be in USA and Canada.

I am looking for a mobile mapping system / GPS system for my mobile office (motorcoach). I have been thinking of possibly a GPS receiver to plug into my notebook and mapping software installed, but it seem it may be too clumsy to use while driving. Any recommendation on software and receiver?

If not that, who makes the better dash system mobile mapper with GPS? It needs to be accurate and have maps up to date, or at least upgradeable.

For my cars I use Caliber GPS P3600 for less than $300. It is pretty good and you can get map updates from their website. For my laptop I use DeLorme Street Atlas USA with GP20 USB plug ($135). They both work OK and even if you don't use your laptop as a GPS, it is a great map program to have on your computer.

What's a good mapping software for gps units?
Lightroom4 beta GPS-2

Is there a software for gps units that i can use to make a map of my hunting lease that will show the trails and hunting stands on it, then upload the map to the unit so that I can easily navigate the area?

The method of making custom maps for a GPS is dependant on which GPS unit that you are using, and is not a simple task. A better way to acomplish what you are looking to might be to get a GPS with a good set of Topo Maps. Then using your GPS make track logs of the different trails, and set waypoints for each of the hunting stands. This would give you a good set of references to navigate around the property.

GPS/mapping software like microsoft's streets and trips for linux?
Newscoop geolocation tool

Is there any mapping software that mimics microsoft streets and trips that I can use on ubuntu. Also if anyone could give me the names of a couple good linux distros( im new to linux) it would be very helpful.

I've never used MS streets program so I don't exactly know what it does. You can download google earth for linux and see if that does what you want.

As for good distros, Mandrake, Fedora, Ubuntu are good beginners distros. All you have to do is pop in the install cd, click a few options, and your ready to go.
I use Gentoo and love it, but it is not exactly an install and go distro, you have to do a lot of manual setting up and compiling. It isn't all that hard, especially because there is a step by step guide about how to install. It's a great way to learn, but it might take a while(you have to compile everything. takes about a day and a half for me to compile everything - X, Gnome, etc...). You may want to try one of the more beginner friendly distros if your not up for that yet.

Welcome to Linux, you'll love it.

Tracklogs: Roads to Nowhere

What's the best one, and what's the best value for the money. So much of the software I see is too expensive!

I have used Telenav for several years and am very happy with it. It goes for about $10 a month. Check to see if your phone is supported.

Does anyone have information on digital cameras with GPS tracking and mapping software?

I am working on a mapping project for school and this new technology could save me time and energy. Thanks in advance.

Save you time and energy i may agree with, but money -- be prepared to spend a few hundred. There are certain GPS devices out there that you may plug into your camera which will record the information with each individual photograph. However, a less costly way to go about doing things and the way I go about doing them when I go hike the barren planes of texas is simply take a GPS with me. If i take a photograph i think is significant i just look down at my GPS and write down the coordinates. I got mine for 150 at best buy, where i work as the digital imaging specialist.

  • TomTom GPS Navigation is coming to an Android device near you ...

I purchased the tomtom iphone application and am very disapointed in its performance. It is unusable without the car kit. When I contacted tomtom they knew of the problem and were suprised apple launced the application when they did. They have been getting many call about the weak signal. Their only recommendation was to wait for the car kit to come out. In effect you pay $99 for something that doen’t work and then are required to pay more for the system to be functional. I DON’T THINK SO. I requested my money back.
