HOW DO NEW STREETS AND ADDRESSES GET PUT INTO GPS MAPPING?
CIMG7562

a relative of mine lives on a street that does not exist on any driving directions map or my gps unit.

The main method is that the mapping companies hire people to drive around with very good (accurate to within an inch) GPSs and they map whatever they can find. I have actually been on a ride with one while we mapped the edges of the roads on an advanced driver's training course.
He (the mapper) had contacts with most of the local contractors and city engineers who would let him know when new streets were being built.

The two large companies are TeleAtlas and Navteq. You can go to their web site and let them know about the street.

What is the best laptop GPS receiver and mapping program?

I am currently looking at the GPS 18 USB Deluxe (with map software) and Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 with GPS Locator. Which is best and are there any others which are better?

Try also considering CoPilot Navigator 9 - it's said to be a good GPS program. I am considering CoPilot or MS Streets and Trips 2007 to purchase with a new laptop. However, the huge drawback of MS Streets 07 is the inability to re-roure automatically, and if you miss an exit, you will need to search for a button and press it --- imagine yourself going 70 mph alone in a traffic... CoPilot has the automatic re-routing, but it doesn't have all features MS has. Consider these two options...

Information on automotive GPS / mobile mapping systems and notebook GPS software?
Lightroom4 beta GPS-2

Use will be in USA and Canada.

I am looking for a mobile mapping system / GPS system for my mobile office (motorcoach). I have been thinking of possibly a GPS receiver to plug into my notebook and mapping software installed, but it seem it may be too clumsy to use while driving. Any recommendation on software and receiver?

If not that, who makes the better dash system mobile mapper with GPS? It needs to be accurate and have maps up to date, or at least upgradeable.

For my cars I use Caliber GPS P3600 for less than $300. It is pretty good and you can get map updates from their website. For my laptop I use DeLorme Street Atlas USA with GP20 USB plug ($135). They both work OK and even if you don't use your laptop as a GPS, it is a great map program to have on your computer.

Do you know where I can get maps with lattitude and longitude online for gps mapping?

You need a topographic map! If you can find a map store, they have them. I used to work at one called Dover Flag and Map in Racine, WI. If you really can't find one you could try them and they ship. Also, you could get your state's gazeteer. It's an atlas of the state made up of topographic maps. However, if you get a just plain topo map (not from the gazeteer) it's much more detailed because it's of a much smaller area. Also, there are CDs from National Geographic that cover the entire state. They're about $100 but it's a lot cheaper than buying a bunch of topo maps ($13 a piece, thousands per state). With the CDs you can print out whatever sections you need. I guess depending on how big of an area you need and how often you would use the maps, I'd either go with a single topo map or the CD set.

What's a good mapping software for gps units?

Is there a software for gps units that i can use to make a map of my hunting lease that will show the trails and hunting stands on it, then upload the map to the unit so that I can easily navigate the area?

The method of making custom maps for a GPS is dependant on which GPS unit that you are using, and is not a simple task. A better way to acomplish what you are looking to might be to get a GPS with a good set of Topo Maps. Then using your GPS make track logs of the different trails, and set waypoints for each of the hunting stands. This would give you a good set of references to navigate around the property.
