I'll be traveling in India this winter for a charity race and need to know what kind of GPS maps are available for the area. Does anyone know of any? Or any Garmin India maps?

Can I use maps other than Garmin in a Garmin GPS?

I am considering getting a Garmin GPS, but it seems they only want you to use their own software, and it's not cheap. What about other GPS software/maps? Will they work in a Garmin unit?


Get a Garmin. Its the best and the most accurate. Garmin pre- installed maps would be ok for two years without an update. I saw a 2110 update in walmart for $45 compare to $79 Magellan map.
Other GPS maps won't work in Garmin so as Garmin maps can't be installed in other brands.I have 2 Garmins and 2 Magellans.

Yes, you need to pay. You need to go to the Garmin site and purchase European maps appropriate to your travels.

Are Garmin GPS maps free to update?

I am looking to buy a Garmin GPS system. I heard a rumor that if you buy a new Garmin system (Nuvi series) that does not have the most updated maps preinstalled that you can get updates for free. Is this true? I can't find anything on the Garmin website without having a serial number first.


New Garmin GPS that you puchase today should come with 2008 maps. If they don't, you get a free update to 2008. This applies to units from July 2007 and later (?) but I am not sure of the cut-off date. If you buy now, you shouldn't have to worry about that.
