The one that came with the gps device started falling off after a few months so I bought a replacement mount for about $30. After another few months, same problem. It just seems to lose its suction power and will fall off after a short time of driving. Any ideas to avoid this problem? The beanbag solution will not work with my gps (which is a Garmin, by the way). Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
You need to make sure your windshield and the suction cup are very clean. Anything that gets between the windshield and the suction cup can cause a slow loss of suction and let the gps fall. If a through cleaning doesn't help, you may have a bad suction cup. See if you can get a replacement in that case.

If it is, is my only option a dashboard mount to my GPS device?
Yes, California Vehicle Code section 26708, subdivision (a), paragraph (2) provides that: “No person shall drive any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied in or upon the vehicle which obstructs or reduces the driver's clear view through the windshield or side windows.”
Personally, I would go with the windshield mount. Worst case scenario, an Officer issues this correctable equipment violation. Switching to the dashboard mount and paying a $10 fine removes the ticket. But if your reception is just as good as the windshield mount then you may as well just want to go with the dashboard mount in the first instance.
*/End of Line.

so, I have a garmin nuvii, and the little mount that uses a suction cup to either hold onto the windshield or disc that stays on the dash board will not stick, it falls off every time it is on it. So what can I do to make it stick, but I can't have it stay permanently in one car because I have more than one vehicle, what do I do?
Make sure the inside of your window is clean. After a while (maybe every other month or so) your interior windows can develop a slick film that makes it hard for suction cups to get a hold on. This will also help your window defrost quicker too.
I got a suction mount device with my Finedigital GPS. But I got to know that it is not legal in California. What other device can I use to mount my GPS. Are there any work arounds or alternative solutions to my problem? Thanks in advance.

Bike screens are more for deflecting wind off your body/helmet than looking through - made of scratch-happy plastics and have no wipers, for a start (some smaller ones are actually opaque) - so it wouldn’t be that much of an issue unless you’re skirting a complicated set of potholes at low speed. With mine, at least, I find the regular instruments are quite a long way down out of the usual line of sight (sort of like having them in the middle of the steering wheel), and checking them involves looking largely away from the road for a fraction of a second. Something you may need to look at for a little longer would indeed be better mounted higher up (in this case, it’s like the typical position of a dashboard-top car nav). Plus it’s quite small so it’s not really going to take up more than a couple degrees of your forward view, the photo exaggerates its apparent hugeness.
