I know cell phones have GPS tracking devices, but can any work as a GPS for giving people directions when they are driving? If not, why not? It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to design.

For example, compared to the Garmin Nuvi series, or something similar. Is it like comparing apples to oranges?
Can some phones be used as car navigation? How good are they at pedestrian navigation?
I'm considering buying a GPS, probably a Garmin Nuvi 750, but if my next cell phone might fulfill the same duties, maybe I won't.
Thanks for any information or advice!
Phones can be used for car navigation but they are not as accurate as a stand alone device like the Nuvi. Another drawback is the small screen. Nothing beats a dedicated navigation device. Buy the Nuvi.
In the US, the federal government requires cell phone companies to know where cell phone users are. This is so that if a cell phone user calls 911, the police/EMS/etc can find them.
Some cell companies perform this look up via cell tower triangulation whereas others do it via GPS. I want to know what companies/phones do this with GPS! And I'm curious what % of cell phones in general have GPS built in!
I don't know. But mine has it built in...I think.

PedalPower+ charges cyclists#39; phones, GPS, iPods
In bygone days, a bicycle dynamo struggled to generate enough energy to power a weak headlight for the lonely cyclist riding home on a dark night. Back then it was the only electronic application that a cyclist needed because dynamos were first invented when riders still made calls from public telephone booths or stopped to read a map for directions. But a new bicycle dynamo system called PedalPower+ can help recharge the arsenal of battery-powered accessories modern cyclists’ rely on for communications, navigation and entertainment - on the fly.
Devices like GPS units, mobile phones, digital cameras, MP3 players and mobile phones require 5V up to 600mA, DC input to recharge them. And if you’re out on the road when they go flat, generally it’s been too bad. Until now.
