On a Garmin GPS product (i5), is it better to use normal GPS mode or WAAS?

You won't get any benefit from using WAAS mode. You will very likely not be able to get the satellites which are very low on the horizon, which works well for airplanes but not for cars. Furthermore, using WAAS uses more power and drains your batteries faster if you're using battery mode.

What's a cheap, reliable, and up to date GPS product for a car?

My range is between 100 and 200 bucks.

I don't own have specific GPS to recommend. But I've owned 3 GPS (only one is nav system). I've compared few and here what I found:

(1) the map database is MORE important than the GPS machine. If the map is NOT accurate the GPS is useless. Get a GPS with well know database(ex:navtec).

(2) if your car interior is light colored, then make sure the GPS is bright enough to over come the glare

(3) if your eyes are not all that good (old people) then get a large screen - at least 4 inches big

(4) if your hearing is not so good, make sure the volume is loud enough.

Also ANY gps left turned off lose sat tracking. The long it is left off the longer it takes to resync sat. Sometimes as long as 1/2 hours. So before a long trip, leave you GPS on by a window with good sky view.

Test your GPS for few week to months locally when you know your roads BEFORE using it on long trips. Get to know your GPS quirks before you really need it.

Also whenever possible double check your GPS findings with either PAPER map or Google map. They can all be wrong at times. Or at least carry a paper map. Electronics have a nasty habit of dying at the worst time.

GPS maps go out of date so it is best to make sure the database company are around to sell you updates.

GPS maps are ALWAYS out of dates in cities with lots of new developments. I found that in old cities (Boston, NYC, Los Angeles) it is fairly accurate as they haven't created new towns / roads in ages. In cities like NJ I found most GPS will NOT be very useful.

Test the GPS to find your favorite retail stores. You may ONLY like Pizza HUT and HATE Domino but the database may have it what you want.

Also test it to find Radio Shack because when you are traveling, Radio Shack can just about sell you any electronic device you are missing (adapter, wires, extension, plugs, batteries, etc.). I found at least one major GPS brand does not have RS in the database.

Good Luck...

Do you have a product suggestion for GPS tracking on my non-motorized fleet?

I cannot seem to find, what I would consider, the right product for my non-motorized fleet of courier vehicles.

What I am trying to find is a magnetized GPS receiver that is small, discreet, and requires no ignition/battery hookups. I need a real-time tracking system which remains inactive within a designated "fenced" location unless I require an on-demand update of the unit's location. Once the fence has been crossed, I would like the unit to fully activate with real-time and automatic tracking as an anti-theft device.

I know that GPS tracking is relatively new, but I can not find any product or service that combines all of these needs together.

Do you have any suggestions?

I assume you are talking about GPS on bicycles, golf carts, or similar devices.

If these are your employee you could require Nextel devices to be carried with them for common business communications. There are a number of GPS options available for Nextel. Some work well, some don't; largely dependent on the quality of coverage in your work area.

In coverage is spotty, you are off the interstate or very rural then you will need an actual GPS device hardwired to the vehicle and it will require 12 volts, installation, etc.

It has been my experience that most of the value of GPS tracking for employees comes from behavior changes when they know they are being monitored. It is not nearly as valuable to play "catch and scold" as it is for them to know you can document all their movements.

Good luck

what i s the perfect GPS product that complies traffic codes?

The new Traffic Code in Mexico City requires all vehicles registered in 2008 to have a GPS Tracking System. Tramigo T22 fits and exceeds this new requirement and gives the car owners a real benefit at the same time.

As the only product in the Market Tramigo gives the user the freedom to decide how he wants to use the product: for emergencies only (as the Traffic Code requires) and also for knowing where his loved ones and assets are at the certain time.

Also available are trip reports, different kinds of alarms or periodical reports of the whereabouts of the assets.

Where can I buy wholesale refurbished gps products?

I am looking to start a business selling Garmin GPS products. I took a look on Ebay and it seems that there are a lot of reburbished items selling for much less than retail price. Where can I get my hands on wholesale refurbished products?

WUVH - http://www.wuvh.com is the best I know

Others I know that are good include:
http://www.Petra.com
http://www.dbldistributing.com
http://www.atozonlinestores.com

You might want to stay away from ebay though, as they are upping fees and everything. I recommend building your own website for the GPS systems and using Adwords etc. to get customers.

  • RIM 8520 Curve Product Manager Interviewed – Why No GPS or Flash ...

Annu from RIM did a nice little interview with, Pankaj, the Product Manager for the BlackBerry 8520 Curve. He explains why the new trackpad was included along with Wi-Fi. The weird thing is that the new trackpad does not seem to have a product name like SurePress or SureType. I was almost sure that RIM would name it…

Sadly he seems to skim over two issues I have with the 8520:

Why is there no GPS support? Every new BlackBerry has it except for the 8520! What happened to the LED flash?

It looks like RIM is placing the 8520 to replace the 83xx series but it looks like it is missing two key features…

    What do you think?
