I am currently looking at the GPS 18 USB Deluxe (with map software) and Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007 with GPS Locator. Which is best and are there any others which are better?
Try also considering CoPilot Navigator 9 - it's said to be a good GPS program. I am considering CoPilot or MS Streets and Trips 2007 to purchase with a new laptop. However, the huge drawback of MS Streets 07 is the inability to re-roure automatically, and if you miss an exit, you will need to search for a button and press it --- imagine yourself going 70 mph alone in a traffic... CoPilot has the automatic re-routing, but it doesn't have all features MS has. Consider these two options...

I'm thinking about buying a laptop GPS system with the receiver. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be using it on the road and I'm not so sure about whether I need Internet access to be able to use it or not. Help?
No you don't need internet access to use a Laptop GPS system. You just need to have a map program that will take the GPS information and put it on a screen for you. MS Trips and Streets, Delorme, etc. These are great little devices and get the information needed from the satelites. So all you need is the GPS receiver and the correct map software and your laptop will show you where you are, will give you directions on how to get where you want to go, etc.
If you want LIVE traffic updates you will need another traffic receiver like XM etc but you don't have to have internet.
Compatible with Microsoft Streets Trips

For Mac users the GPS receiver works in Parallels Desktop without rebooting into Windows so you can use Front Row for a more driver-friendly iTunes interface.
Connect to your notebook PC, desktop PC, or Tablet PC through a USB cable.
iGPS-360 Convertible GPS Receiver Design allows you to use one GPS receiver for multiple configurations (i.e. CF, PCMCIA with adapter, USB, sync cable, and Bluetooth) (USB adapter is included, but the other accessories are sold separately)
Hello, im looking for a way to use my laptop as a gps device without a gps receiver. Does anyone know if there is a program (prefferably free) that would let me do this?
Thanks in advance
Cameron,
A gps receiver gets it's data from 3 or more satellite's.
you cant know your location if you do not have it
but if you are connected to the net your ip will tell you in which country you are (this means you are really lost) . :-)

I have a Blackberry Curve with a built-in GPS receiver but our corporate policy blocks the user of the Blackberry Maps application and stop me installing other apps. Can I use the GPS receiver functionality in the Blackberry from my laptop with a suitable mapping program or perhaps MS Autoroute?
yes you can
I have a pharos wireless gps receiver. Made for software and mapping programs for Pocket PC. (Streets, directions, north America) My pocket PC is out of commission. I want to utilize the receiver for GPS navigation. Can anyone recommend a generic pc based map program that can work with a gps receiver. I assume that the pharos receiver will work. Maybe not.
Thanks!!!
Microsoft MapPoint will allow access to various GPS rdevices assuming they use a standard format. Bluetooth access is unknown to me, but seems likely.Mapquest supports:
GPS functionality requires a GPS device that supports NMEA 2.0 or later
• A free COM port below 20 required for GPS
to the last point, perhaps a bluetooth device that plugs into USB is really what you want.
